Salary: £36,636 to £38,784 per annum Closing Date: 09 July 2026

The Role
The School of English Literature, Language, and Linguistics invites applications for a full-time (1 FTE) fixed-term Lectureship in Medieval Literature (Teaching and Scholarship), spanning 1 September 2026 to 30 June 2027.
Key Responsibilities:
You will be expected to:
- Co-teach two core stage 2 modules:
- SEL2242: “Medieval Worlds”
- SEL2219: “Monsters, Misery and Miracles”
- Contribute to SEL1034: “Beginnings” (a stage 1 module)
- Supervise and second-mark stage 3 dissertations
- Act as an Academic Advisor for a cohort of undergraduate students
- Manage administrative tasks as required
Essential Requirements:
- A completed PhD in a relevant subject area (e.g., Medieval Literature, Language, or Linguistics)
- Proven experience in teaching Old English and Middle English literature at undergraduate level
- A commitment to high-quality research led teaching in the medieval period
- Pastoral care experience in an academic setting or willingness to develop this skill
Desirable:
- Teaching and supervision experience at postgraduate level
- Interest in Early Modern Literature
- Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellowship or a commitment to undertake relevant teaching qualifications

Key areas of strength:
- Medieval research (Dr James Cummings’ work on medieval drama; Dr Adam Mearns’ research into Old English language and linguistics)
- Scholarly early modern editions, including projects for Thomas Nashe and Ben Jonson
- Interdisciplinary early modern studies and sexual cultures research
Staff are actively involved in: ✔ MEMS (Medieval and Early Modern Studies Community) – a scholarly network embedded within the School ✔ Faculty Research Groups (e.g., The Newcastle Postcolonial Research Group, Newcastle Medical Humanities Network) ✔ Creative Writing collaborations (including prize-winning poets, playwrights, and screenwriters) ✔ The Newcastle Centre for Literary Arts (NCLA)
Key Accountabilities
Teaching & Scholarship
- Design and deliver high-quality teaching material in medieval literature, language, and related disciplines
- Teach on undergraduate and taught postgraduate modules, including team-taught modules
- Engage in postgraduate dissertation and research project supervision
Pastoral Support & Administration
- Provide pastoral guidance and personal tutoring where applicable
- Maintain responsible conduct with specialist oversight if needed
- Prepare, mark and assess work, providing targeted feedback
- Involvement in module and programme development to enhance curricular quality
Professional & Collegial Duties
-perspective to earning HEA Fellowship, or potential
- Incorporate research, scholarship, or professional activities into teaching practice
- Work collaboratively across SELLL and the broader university community
- Administer tasks as directed by the Head of School
Qualifications, Experience & Key Features
Essential:
- A completed PhD in an appropriate subject area (Medieval Literature, Language, or Linguistics)
