The Opportunity

Join the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at UNSW as a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in a Teaching and Research role. In this role, you will contribute to high-quality research and education in transport engineering while helping to shape the future of sustainable, intelligent, and connected transport systems.

You will conduct research in areas including network modelling, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), their supporting infrastructure and systems, and AI-based traffic control, monitoring, and maintenance systems, contributing to the future of intelligent and data-driven transport networks. Through your research, you will deliver high-impact outcomes and strengthen the School’s growing reputation in transport engineering and mobility innovation.

About You

You are an emerging or established academic with expertise in transport engineering and a passion for research and teaching excellence. You bring experience in areas such as network modelling, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), transport infrastructure, or AI-enabled traffic systems, and demonstrate the potential to build a strong research profile.

At Lecturer level (Level B), you will be developing your research profile and contributing to collaborative research activities, including scholarly publications and competitive grant applications, while delivering high-quality teaching and supporting student learning across undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

At Senior Lecturer level (Level C), you will demonstrate an established research track record with evidence of research leadership, success in securing competitive funding, supervising HDR students, and making significant independent contributions to your field. You will also contribute to educational leadership through curriculum development, mentoring students and colleagues, and fostering innovation in teaching and learning.

You are an engaging educator and collaborative colleague with the ability to build strong relationships across academia, industry, and government, and a commitment to contributing to a high-performing and inclusive academic environment.

Skills And Experience

Lecturer (Level B)

A PhD and/or relevant work experience with network modelling, Intelligent Transport and Systems (ITS), Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), their infrastructure and systems, and AI-based traffic control systems. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g. relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales). Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning (desirable). Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership. A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry. High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines. Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

Senior Lecturer (Level C)

A PhD and/or relevant work experience with network modelling, Intelligent Transport and Systems (ITS), Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), their infrastructure and systems, and AI-based traffic control systems. Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments. Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Experience of implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others. Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement. Demonstrated experience with industry or work-integrated learning. Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity diversity and inclusion initiatives. Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership. Experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high calibre students. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships. Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills. Demonstrated ability to interact with the profession and industry and attract funding for learning and teaching initiatives. An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines. Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
