Legal Biller – London, Global Finance Team

About the London Finance Department

The London Finance function comprises approximately 70 staff, structured across key departments:

  • Billing
  • Business Control
  • Cash Office
  • Client Maintenance
  • Partners Matters
  • Salaries
  • Financial Analysis
  • Financial Systems and Reporting

The department handles all financial matters for the London office and coordinates global financial affairs.

The Billing department manages the entire billing lifecycle, including:

  • Work in progress (WIP) oversight
  • Bill preparation, processing, and invoicing
  • Collection of outstanding invoices
  • Provision of key billing, WIP, and debtor analytics to support financial decision-making

Additionally, the department ensures accuracy and maintainence of master data for clients, matters, and fee earners to enable smooth billing operations.

Working Hours & Flexibility

  • Core hours: 35 hours per week (9:30 AM – 5:30 PM)
  • Additional hours may be required.
  • Hybrid working: 40% remote, 60% in-office (negotiable—contact the recruitment team to discuss).

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive, detail-driven Legal Biller to join our Finance team in London:

  • You will handle accounting, billing, and reporting for global legal matters.
  • This role operates in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, working with Partners, Personal Assistants, Revenue Controllers, eBilling, and global teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proforma & Invoicing:

    • Prepare and issue invoices in 3E, ensuring compliance with VAT/Tax rules, currencies, and client-specific instructions.
    • Handle credit notes, reversals, reissues, write-offs, and adjustments.
    • Manage multi-currency, multi-payor, and cross-border billing.
    • Maintain WIP tracking, month-end reports, and billing accuracy logs.
  • Global & Multijurisdictional Billing:

    • Collaborate with APAC, EMEA, MENA, and USA teams for consistent, complex matter billing standards.
    • Lead monthly/quarterly billing runs, adhering to client penalty structures.
  • Client & Engagement Management:

    • Interpret engagement letters to ensure compliance with SRA Accounting rules and HMRC guidance.
    • Manage shared billing system portals, proforma requests, and query resolution within SLAs.
  • Process Improvement & Team Support:

    • Update/update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for global/specific client requirements.
    • Exercise initiative, step in to cover absences, and drive operational improvements.
    • Provide client, stakeholder, and team support with tact and efficiency.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Expertise in legal or professional services billing.
  • Proven experience using 3E billing software.
  • Strong multi-currency, VAT, and withholding tax (WHT) handling skills.
  • Experience with global cross-team collaboration (ideally multijurisdiction).
  • Attention to detail + exceptional organisation with ability to manage tight deadlines.
  • SRA Accounting knowledge and awareness of tax/accounting rules.
  • Intermediate Excel (pivot tables, advanced functions) + MS Word for reports.
  • Confident communicator, able to liaise with Clients, Partners, and cross-functional teams.
