The Role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive freelance Legal Cashier to join our growing employment law firm. This is a key role responsible for managing the firm's day-to-day finance function, ensuring full compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules, maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the business with timely financial reporting.

This is a hybrid role, requiring attendance at our Maidenhead office for a full day every Monday, with remote working for the remainder of the week for approximately two hours per day.

The successful candidate will have previous experience working within a UK law firm and be confident managing both client and office accounts with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor the accounts inbox and respond to client account, office account and financial queries in a timely manner
  • Manage daily client and office account transactions in accordance with the Solicitors Accounts Rules (SAR) and SRA Accounts Rules
  • Perform bank, client account and credit card reconciliations
  • Process client receipts, payments, electronic transfers and office account transactions
  • Complete supplier forms and set up new suppliers in the accounting system
  • Chase unpaid invoices and manage credit control
  • Communicate outstanding amounts due to the Managing Director and Fee Earners where appropriate
  • Send client invoices accurately and in a timely manner, including producing bills from the practice management system where required
  • Process payments to suppliers and maintain accurate financial records
  • Maintain accurate accounting records using Xero, LEAP and other legal practice management systems
  • Manage office and client account ledgers, ensuring all postings are accurate and compliant
  • Generate and interpret financial reports for internal use, including cashflow reports, aged debtors, WIP and management accounts where required
  • Ensure full compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules, Solicitors Accounts Rules, AML regulations and internal financial procedures
  • Prepare and assist with month-end and year-end accounting processes, including supporting external accountants and auditors
  • Monitor residual balances, client account balances and ensure prompt resolution of any breaches or anomalies
  • Support fee earners with billing, disbursements, transfers and financial queries
  • Liaise with the outsourced accountants/bookkeepers to ensure consistency and accurate financial reporting
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial controls, processes and efficiencies across the firm
  • Provide support and guidance to junior accounts staff as the finance function grows
  • Manage payment of invoices for the firm
  • Check the VAT return prepared by the Accountancy firm quarterly
  • Manage the firm's expenses

We are a small but growing law firm based in Maidenhead, Berkshire, known for delivering high-quality legal services with a personal touch. As our practice expands, we are looking for an experienced Legal Cashier/Accountant to support our financial operations.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working in a law firm is essential
  • Accounting qualification (AAT, ACCA, or similar) is required
  • Experience with Xero and LEAP software essential
  • In-depth knowledge of Solicitors Accounts Rules
  • Highly organised, discreet and reliable
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication and attention to detail
