Legal Counsel
Superb Opportunity Ambitious and talented lawyer to join our legal team at DC Thomson, a leading UK media organisation with 19th-century roots and a modern portfolio across publishing, digital media, TV, radio, events, genealogy, energy, retail, and technology.

About the Role
Location: Dundee (hybrid: 1–2 days in-office weekly) Team: Small but highly impactful—collaborative, with a strong partnering model that offers autonomy and cross-departmental influence.
As the primary legal partner to key areas (including puzzles, energy, subscription, product & technology), you’ll provide pragmatic, business-focused legal advice—balancing commercial needs with risk management and governance. Duties include:
- Drafting, negotiating, and reviewing contracts (supply, consumer, and digital/tech).
- Advising on legal/compliance matters (IP, data protection, consumer regulations).
- Supporting policy & process development.
- Collaborating with external counsel as needed.
- Business impact beyond legal—contribute to growth strategies while mitigating risk.

Key Responsibilities
- Acts as the strategic legal advisor for puzzles, energy, and tech/product teams.
- Delivers contract management, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Drives commercial and regulatory compliance (with emphasis on data governance and AI considerations).
- Enhances reputation and impact through proactive risk-business alignment.
- Operates with autonomy while supporting a dynamic, fast-paced media/tech environment.
Requirements
- UK-qualified solicitor with 3+ years PQE, ideally from private practice or in-house. (Open to otherwise experienced candidates if skills/aspirations align.)
- Strong commercial legal experience: Focus on contractual drafting/negotiation (B2C, B2B, digital/tech products).
- IP/data protection expertise with consumer/commercial compliance awareness; preference for AI/data governance awareness.
- Pragmatic mindset: Ability to blend technical rigorousness with business problem-solving.
- Stakeholder influence: Builds credibility across functional areas in a complex, multi-business organisation.
- Leadership in communication: Confident negotiator, presenter, and persuasive communicator.
- Operational resilience: Manages competing priorities in a high-energy team.
- Tech/legal tools proficiency: Experience with AI tools for legal workflows.
- Preferred but not essential: Background in media, technology, or TMT sectors.
