Overview of the Role

The Group Legal Department is seeking a proactive and positive Legal Counsel to support the Regional General Counsel (EUNA) and Senior Legal Counsels in delivering strategic legal advice across Mott MacDonald’s global infrastructure consultancy business, with a primary focus on the UK market.

Key Responsibilities

This role combines practical expertise with collaborative problem-solving, allowing you to advise on a diverse range of transactional and construction-related legal matters. Reporting to the Regional General Counsel (EUNA), you’ll contribute to shaping major projects while working with multi-disciplinary teams in Croydon and globally.

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating critical construction documentation, including:

    • Consultancy agreements
    • Construction contracts (e.g., JCT, NEC, FIDIC)
    • Framework agreements
    • Collateral warranties
    • Novation deeds
    • Parent company guarantees
  • Providing legal guidance on UK and international construction law, ensuring alignment with company governance and internal approvals.

  • Revising and maintaining legal templates for consistent, high-quality contracts.

  • Creating and updating legal guidance for internal use.

  • Advocating on litigation and insurance matters, including liaising with external counsel and subject-matter experts.

  • Collaborating across the Legal Department, supporting:

    • Ethics & Compliance
    • Privacy & Data Protection

Location & Working Pattern

  • Primary base: Croydon (London area), with hybrid flexibility for eligible candidates.
  • Travel requirement: Approx. 2 trips per month to Croydon Head Office.
  • Relevant regions: Focus on Europe & UK (EUNA); support opportunities may arise for North America, Middle East, and Asia Pacific.

Responsibilities

Proactive Project Legal Support

Work directly with project teams and senior leadership to:

  • Interpret and enforce contractual terms relevant to infrastructure consultancy projects.
  • Provide risk management advice, particularly for new business developments.

Document Management

  • Maintain and update legal frameworks, tools, and knowledge-sharing resources.
  • Ensure compliance by inspecting contractual compliance and adhering to governance principles.

Team Collaboration

  • Assist on externally facing legal matters, offering guidance to our expanding international base.
  • Work with cross-disciplinary experts (including engineers and commercial teams) to navigate disputes and non-litigation matters.

Strategic Leadership

  • Support the Regional General Counsel (EUNA) in refining departmental processes, procedures, and business strategies.
  • Advocate for dynamic contract clauses and innovative solutions to benefit operational efficiency.

Candidate Specification

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Training

  • Qualified solicitor (England & Wales), with consideration for other common-law jurisdictions.
  • Strong legal knowledge in construction law, either from private practice or in-house experience at a major contractor, engineer, or consultant firm.

Skills & Expertise

  • Transaction & negotiation experience: Drafting construction-related documentation from a tenant/employee perspective.
  • Construction contracts: Emphasis on framework agreements, warranties, and guarantees.
  • Dispute resolution & insurance: Technical experience (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Adaptability: Knowledge of international law and foreign jurisdictional risk a plus.

Essential Personal Qualites

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to handle complex contracts efficiently.
  • Excellent communication: Ability to negotiate confidently with stakeholders across geographies.
  • Team player: Collaborates but also operates autonomously within tight deadlines.
  • Commercial awareness: Sharp, Sanity connectors to enhance client-motivated deal structuring.
