Legal Counsel
Legal Counsel (Infrastructure Consultancy) – Croydon, UK

Overview of the Role
The Group Legal Department is a UK/EUNA-based (Europe & UK: North America, Middle East, Asia Pacific) team supporting global infrastructure consultancy businesses through legal expertise. We are seeking an ambitious Legal Counsel to join permanently, reporting to the Regional General Counsel – EUNA and supporting Senior Legal Counsels in advising on transactional UK and international construction law matters.
This role is based in Croydon (with hybrid flexibility), focusing primarily on the UK infrastructure sector while engaging with other global regions. You will draft, negotiate, and manage critical contracts, guide projects through compliance frameworks, and collaborate with stakeholders across legal, project, and business teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating construction documentation, including:
- Consultancy agreements
- Construction contracts (e.g., JCT, NEC, FIDIC)
- Framework agreements
- Collateral warranties
- Novation deeds
- Parent company guarantees
- Ensuring adherence to Mott MacDonald’s governance and securing required internal approvals
- Advising on UK and international laws/regulations specific to construction and engineering
- Revising and maintaining legal templates and documentation standards
- Providing guidance on litigation, disputes, and insurance matters (including liaising with external counsel)
- Supporting Ethics & Compliance and Privacy & Data Protection teams on construction-related issues

Travel: Occasional visits to Croydon Head Office (~2x per month) expected, with flexibility for hybrid locations (if based outside Croydon).
Candidate Specification
Requirements
- England & Wales qualified solicitor (qualifications from other Common Law jurisdictions also considered).
- Extensive post-qualification experience (PQE) in construction law, gained either:
- In private practice (construction-focused)
- At an in-house role for a major contractor, engineering, or architectural firm (a plus, though not mandatory).
- Proven experience in:
- Negotiating and drafting construction contracts (e.g., JCT, NEC, FIDIC)
- Dealing with UK and international construction disputes (strengthens but is not essential).
- Analytical prowess with strong legal drafting and negotiation abilities.
- Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and balance competing deadlines for strategic projects.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with project teams, senior management, and external parties.
- Adaptability to work both autonomously and as part of a global legal team.
