Legal Counsel
Job Description
The Legal Counsel provides day-to-day legal support to the Canon UK business, ensuring that commercial activities are conducted in line with Canon’s legal standards, governance requirements, and applicable laws and regulations. The role works closely with Sales teams, the Commercial Group (MD Office), and other business stakeholders to support the review and negotiation of commercial agreements and to identify and manage legal risks.
The position forms part of the combined Canon Europe HQ and Canon UK Legal team and collaborates with colleagues across the organisation to provide consistent and efficient legal support.
Responsibilities
As the Legal Counsel for Canon UK, your responsibilities will be to:
- Provide legal advice and support to Canon UK business teams on commercial, contractual, and governance matters.
- Review, draft, and negotiate a range of commercial agreements including customer contracts, supplier agreements, NDAs, and other business arrangements.
- Support Sales teams and the Commercial Group (MD Office) in structuring customer agreements and ensuring alignment with Canon’s contractual standards and governance processes.
- Identify legal risks in commercial transactions and provide practical guidance to support appropriate mitigation.
- Escalate complex or high-risk matters to the Director of Legal and collaborate with colleagues within the wider Canon Europe Legal team where required.
- Contribute to the development and consistent use of legal templates, playbooks, and internal guidance materials.
- Provide training and guidance to business stakeholders on contractual processes, legal risks, and compliance requirements where appropriate.

Qualifications
To be successful in this role as our Legal Counsel, you will possess the following experience and skills:
- A qualified lawyer with proven and relevant post-qualification experience (PQE) in commercial law or in-house legal support.
- Experience in IT/Cloud/technology-driven environments.
- Demonstrable experience in autonomously drafting, reviewing, and negotiating IT services, SAAS distribution, software licensing, and other standard commercial contracts.
- Good working knowledge of relevant legal areas, particularly data protection and digital regulations, competition law, marketing, and the ability to learn and assimilate as required.
- Strong EQ, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to build business relationships across the organisation and ensure the legal department partners accordingly.

Compensation
The salary for this role is up to £68,000 plus 10% bonus and company benefits.
