Legal Engineer

Legal Engineer – Reed Smith Legal Solutions

Position Summary

Students in this wrap-up assignment will work with at least two different lawyers to assume the role of Legal Engineer within Reed Smith’s Legal Solutions team, helping to deliver legal work efficiently through a variety of solutions for our UK-based legal teams in London and Leeds.

This role is at the heart of process improvement, where Legal Engineers design solutions for legal outputs, optimise workflows, and help implement technology (including AI) to streamline legal operations across delivery teams and the broader firm.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Transitioning legal tasks into standardised processes
  • Leading continual improvement initiatives
  • Delivering structured optimisation projects
  • Deploying technology where appropriate

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Process Design & Transition Management

  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for legal work to transition into delivery operations
  • Collaborate with lawyers and paralegals to convert work into robust, process-driven service solutions
  • Design point solutions for legal outputs to enhance efficiency

Improvement Programme Management

  • Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement within legal delivery centres
  • Prioritise process and performance improvements across services
  • Analyse causes of service lapses, implement corrective actions, and prevent recurrence
  • Support colleagues by guiding improvement projects with methodological rigor

Improvement Project Delivery

  • Identify, plan, and deliver process-oriented projects targeting:
    • Faster lead times
    • Cost savings
    • Enhanced service delivery
  • Foster cross-teaming innovation in service delivery across internal clients
  • Establish and implement best practices in process refinement
  • Recommend and manage technology deployment where beneficial to optimised workflows

Required Skills & Experience

Essentials

  • Professional experience in a full-service commercial law firm, legal department, legal tech vendor, or consultancy
  • Familiarity with legal technology:
    • Case management (e.g., iManage)
    • E-signature (e.g., DocuSign)
    • Process automation (e.g., Power Automate, Bryter)
    • AI/document discovery tools (e.g., Kira, Harvey)
  • Strong ability to build trust and credibility with diverse stakeholders (lawyers, delivery executives, business leadership)
  • Demonstrable experience in process improvement applied to legal operations
  • Commitment to exploring alternative legal career paths, particularly in tech-enabled workflows
  • Project management expertise with attention to detail under tight deadlines
  • Proven ability to leverage technology for process enhancements
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with adaptability to new software
  • Resilience, accountability, and reliability with a track record of exceeding expectations
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly when interfacing with legal teams and non-legal stakeholders

Desirable (Training Will Be Provided)

  • Experience with BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) process modeling

Education & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field

  • Training offer: Reed Smith provides comprehensive support, including Lean Six Sigma training, though formal certification (e.g., Black Belt) is not mandatory.
