Level 2 Facilities Operative Apprenticeship – Carre’s Grammar School

We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual to join us as a Facilities Operative Apprentice, supporting the smooth running, safety, and maintenance of the school site.

Apprenticeship Overview

  • Salary: £12,480 per year (£8.00/hour)
  • Hours: 30 hours per week
  • Working Week: Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM (30-minute lunch break)
  • Training: Online apprenticeship supported by skilled tutors
  • Qualification: Level 2 Facilities Operative Apprenticeship
  • Location: Northgate, Sleaford, NG34 7DD

The Role

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Site Operations

    • Assist with routine opening and closing of the school site, lettings, and special events.
    • Monitor site security, reporting unauthorised access, damage, or safety concerns to the Senior Estates Officer.
    • Follow security and safeguarding procedures when contractors or visitors are present.
  • Health & Safety & Maintenance

    • Conduct regular site checks to identify health, safety, or maintenance issues and report findings.
    • Assist with weekly fire alarm tests and emergency lighting checks.
    • Support water safety inspections and record-keeping.
    • Adhere to COSHH assessments and school health and safety policies while working.

  • Basic & Minor Maintenance

    • Carry out tasks such as replacing bulbs, making small repairs, and setting up rooms.
    • Report maintenance issues and assist contractors under supervision.
    • Use tools and equipment safely under PUWER regulations.
  • Grounds & Administrative Support

    • Perform routine site tasks, including litter picking, waste management, moving furniture, and basic grounds maintenance.
    • Handle confidential waste disposal following school procedures.
    • Prepare rooms for lessons, exams, events, and lettings.
  • Logistics & Inventory

    • Receive and move deliveries to appropriate storage.
    • Help maintain an inventory of tools, ladders, and furniture under supervision.
    • Assist in supervising contractors, ensuring safeguarding and site rules.

The Candidate

Qualifications, Qualities & Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Basic experience or interest in cleaning and maintenance work.
  • Good practical and DIY skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Clear communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Basic numeracy and literacy competency.
  • Awareness of health and safety protocols and ability to use cleaning products safely.
  • Strong organisation and time management skills.
  • A flexible, problem-solving approach.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, allowing for positive relationships with staff and visitors.
  • Understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, and equality principles.
  • Willingness to learn and develop in the role.

Training & Development

As an apprentice, you will receive:

  • Study towards a Level 2 Facilities Operative diploma qualification.
  • Hands-on learning and mentoring from experienced staff.
  • Regular progress reviews and development support.

Expected Outcome & Career Progression

  • Successful completion of a Level 2 Facilities Operative Apprenticeship.
  • Potential for continued employment in facilities management or related roles, subject to performance and school requirements.

Pre-Employment Checks

Upon an offer of employment, the organisation will:

  • Conduct right-to-work checks.
  • Require an enhanced DBS check (involving a children’s barred list check).
  • Ensure full adherence to safeguarding policies (aligned with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance).
