Level 2 Facilities Operative Apprenticeship - The Halifax Academy
The Halifax Academy is a through school providing education from primary through to secondary level, and is part of the Impact Multi Academy Trust. Located in Halifax, West Yorkshire, the Academy is committed to maintaining a safe, clean and supportive environment for all students, staff and visitors.
We are looking for two reliable and motivated individuals to join us as Facilities Operative Apprentices, supporting the smooth running, safety and maintenance of the Academy site.
Apprenticeship Summary
- Salary: £12,480 a year (based on £8.00 per hour)
- Working Week:
- Position 1: Monday- Friday 6am- 12:30pm (30 minute break)
- Position 2: Monday- Friday 11:30am- 6pm (30 minute break)
- Hours: 30 hours per week
- Training: Online apprenticeship training supported by skilled tutors
- Location: The Halifax Academy, Spring Hall Lane, Halifax, West Yorkshire, HX1 4TW (willing to travel to other sites if required)
The Role
This role involves supporting the facilities and estates team in maintaining the Academy buildings and grounds to a high standard. You will help ensure a safe, secure and clean environment for all users of the site.
You will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the Academy by carrying out a wide range of caretaking duties, including security, maintenance, cleaning and health and safety compliance.
Main Duties
- Act as a keyholder, assisting with opening and closing the Academy buildings and grounds
- Support security procedures and respond to emergency situations such as alarms, flooding, or adverse weather
- Help ensure the site remains secure and prevent unauthorised access
- Support compliance with health and safety procedures and policies
- Assist with risk assessments where required
- Carry out routine checks on fire alarms, water systems, and other equipment
- Follow procedures in the event of fire, accidents, or site emergencies
- Carry out first-line repairs and basic maintenance tasks
- Ensure all areas are clean, tidy, and free from litter
- Maintain drains and gullies to ensure they are clean and functioning
- Monitor cleaning equipment and ensure compliance with COSHH regulations
- Ensure all equipment is safe and arrange repairs when necessary
- Set up and clear away furniture for exams, assemblies, and events
- Receive, move, and distribute deliveries and equipment
- Assist with porterage duties across the site
- Support access to buildings during emergencies
- Work under the direction of the Facilities, Services & Estates Manager while using initiative
- Participate in training and CPD activities
- Maintain confidentiality, particularly regarding safeguarding information
- Follow all Academy policies including safeguarding and health & safety
- Undertake additional duties as required

The Candidate
Qualifications, Qualities & Experience
- Basic knowledge or experience in:
- Plumbing
- Painting and decorating
- Woodwork
- Cleaning
- Understanding of health and safety practices
- Awareness of safeguarding principles
- Good practical and DIY skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Flexible approach to working hours and shift patterns
- Ability to prioritise tasks and adapt to changing needs
- Willingness to travel to other sites if required

Training and Development
As an apprentice, you will receive support through both on-the-job learning and formal training as part of your apprenticeship programme. This will typically include:
- Study towards a Level 2 Facilities Operative qualification
- On-the-job training and mentoring from experienced facilities staff
- Regular progress reviews and development support
