Senior Social Worker/Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) or Experienced Level 1 Social Worker (AMHP Training Route)

Location: Greenwich West Locality, 68 The Heights, Charlton, SE7 8JH Team: ADAPT (Anxiety, Depression, Affective Disorders, Personality Disorders and Trauma)


About the Role

Royal Greenwich is delighted to invite applicants to join our innovative Adult Mental Health Service, which provides crucial support to adults aged 16–65 experiencing complex mental health challenges (e.g., depression, anxiety, personality disorder, trauma).

We are seeking passionate, compassionate professionals who wish to:

  • Deliver high-quality, strengths-based mental health interventions
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team focused on enhancing wellbeing and independence
  • Commit to career progression in a supportive, learning-focused environment

As part of ADAPT, you will collaborate with colleagues including Community Mental Health Nurses, Psychiatrists, Occupational Therapists, and Volunteers with Lived Experience to create personalised care plans.


Key Responsibilities

Senior Social Worker/AMHP (Qualified Candidates)

  • Responsibility for statutory assessments & safeguarding:
    • Conduct Care Act 2014 assessments & reviews
    • Perform Safeguarding Adults investigations, including:
      • Manager of Safeguarding Adults Enquiries
      • Think Family Champion & MARAC Representative (where applicable)
      • Application of Mental Capacity Act 2005
    • Support mental health & criminal justice liaisons under the Mental Health Act 1983 (2007)
  • Case management: Autonomously lead caseloads, conducting detailed strengths-based assessments to determine eligibility for support.
  • Care planning & advocacy: Guide individuals and families in problem-solving, self-help strategies, and safeguarding their wellbeing.
  • AMHP operating role: Represent the Local Authority in hospital discharge planning, court applications, Section 117 procedures, and multi-agency alliances.
  • Data & documentation: Complete statutory reports and evaluations in compliance with deadlines.

Experienced Level 1 Social Worker (Trainee AMHP Route)

Alongside core Social Work duties, you will:

  • Train to AMHP standard through structured pathways (with 18 hours of approval training annually plus mentorship).
  • Participate in AMHP-specific workshops, forums, and borough-wide supervision alongside qualified colleagues.

Interprofessional Collaboration

  • Partner with NHS Oxleas Foundation Trust (Ellen Silver Award Trust of the Year 2023), housing teams, voluntary-sector organisations, and community groups.
  • Engage with Housing & Homes, ensuring cohesive housing-related mental health support.

Requirements & Skills

Essential Criteria

✔ Qualification:

  • Senior Social Worker/AMHP: Minimum Corporateship or equivalent qualifications + full AMHP approval.
  • Trainee AMHP (Level 1): Fully Qualified Social Worker (e.g., with qualified SW degree + QSW/EWS registration) + **AMHP application ready to train ✔ Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years qualified SW experience (or equivalent) in Adult Mental Health, Safeguarding, or Assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability in person-centred risk assessment/work. ✔ Legislation knowledge:
  • Fluent application of Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Mental Health Act 2007, and Children Act 1989. ✔ Teamwork: Experience collaborating in multidisciplinary settings (GP teams, housing support, statutory agencies). ✔ Reflective & ethics-driven practice: Adheres to RCSW/SW England standards and actively engages in supervision/reflective practice.

Desirable Skills

🔹 Recruitment, retention & community engagement with complex client cohorts (e.g., those with nil-recourse to benefits or cleared substance-useissues). 🔹 Experience within Personality Disorder services or Trauma-informed Care. 💡 Commitment to professional development, including Social Work England registration requirements.
