Your Role as an Apprentice
Your role as an apprentice will be to understand and become proficient in the production and assembly techniques applicable to the manufacture of moulded parts for crash test dummies.
What You'll Do at Work
- Work with and learn from other members of the crash dummy team to become proficient in the manufacture of product
- Learn to understand the development and progression of materials and components
- Attend college or a training centre to gain an engineering qualification
- Learn assembly techniques to comply with drawings, specifications or regulatory requirements
- Become competent working with a variety of materials, understanding their properties and applications
- Be conversant with and adhere to agreed manufacturing, safety, environment and quality procedures, ensuring all documentation is completed (e.g., defect reports) and repairs are undertaken
- Learn to read and understand engineering drawings and documentation
- Gain the understanding of working to tolerances, for example weight, dimension and surface finish
- Provide support to the Product Development team and assist others when necessary
- Good communication and co-operation with team members and the wider company
- Learn to follow company administrative procedures
- Understand and adhere to the company’s health, safety, quality and environmental policies
- Working in a 5-S environment
- Any additional work identified as necessary for the smooth operation of the business

What You'll Learn
Course Contents
- Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
- Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
- Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
- Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
- Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
- Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
- Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
- Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
- Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
- Reporting work outcomes or issues.
- Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
- Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
- Operating within limits of responsibility.
- Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training Schedule
- Year 1: 1 day a week at Peterborough College
- Year 2: 1 day a week at Peterborough College
- Year 3: 1 day a week at Peterborough College
- Year 4: Fully work-based
Desirable Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- English (grade 4/C)
- Maths (grade 4/C)
Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
