Role Overview
The Learning Support Assistants provide support within the Academy environment to enable any child or children to gain maximum access to the National Curriculum by following clear guidelines provided by any involved agencies.
Wage
- £14,040 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age
- National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

- Monday - Friday, 8.25am - 3.45pm
- 33 hours 45 minutes a week

Job Responsibilities
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Assist students following a programme of support clearly defined by the Individualised Learning Department and to work alongside teaching and other appropriate staff dependent on the nature of particular needs of the child or the children
- Work collaboratively with teachers and other staff as an inaugural part of the teaching team
- Assist students with learning difficulties using a variety of resources, which may involve support in reading, writing, spelling and computer-based learning under the direction of appropriate teaching staff
- Support students to develop fully alongside their peer group using a clearly defined programme as directed by the Individualised Learning Co-ordinator
- Regularly update to Individualised Learning Co-ordinator on progress made by students or difficulties faced by individual students
- Become familiar with the differing learning needs and teaching strategies for students with ADHD, autism, specific learning difficulties, general learning difficulties and other learning problems which might become apparent
- Support students with additional needs which may include sensory impairment or of a medical nature. Duties and advice will be clearly outlined, and may include PE supervisions (help with dressing/undressing)
- Support students with emotional behaviour difficulties within the classroom under the direction of the Individualised Learning Co-ordinator/teaching staff
- Undertake appropriate training to enhance skills or knowledge
- Assist teaching staff in setting appropriate targets based on objectives set in Individual Educational Plans
- Supplement the work of outside agencies such as speech therapists, educational psychologists and members of the specialist learning team
- Act as Hard Mentors for students.
- Any other reasonable duties as required by the Principal

Course Contents
- Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
- Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
- Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
- Adapt resources to support all learners.
- Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
- Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
- Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
- Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
- Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
- Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
- Apply methods of formative assessment.
- Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
- Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
- Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
- Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
- Provide feedback to learners.

Essential Qualifications
- GCSE in:
- Maths & English (grade 4 or above)
- NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants in:
- NVQ 2 for Teaching Assistants (grade NVQ 2)

Other Requirements
- Pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
- Experience in working with or caring for learner of the relevant age.
- Good ICT skills and ability to use other types of learning technology:
- Photocopying
- Whiteboards
- Understanding of codes of practice and recent relevant education
- Basic understanding of child development
- Can work as a member of a team, understanding their role in the classroom and associated responsibilities
- Appropriate first aid knowledge
- Willingness to participate in training and personal development
