Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship – West House School
West House School is an independent preparatory school located in the leafy surroundings of the Calthorpe Estate in Edgbaston, Birmingham. Established in 1895, the school provides an outstanding education for boys aged 4–11 alongside a co-educational Early Years setting for children from 6 months old. The school is committed to providing a caring, inspiring and inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and caring individual to join us as a Teaching Assistant Apprentice within our Year 2 class. The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for working with young children and will be eager to gain valuable hands-on experience in a busy independent school environment while completing a nationally recognised apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship Summary
- Salary: £12,480 per year (based on £8.00 per hour)
- Working Week: Monday, Friday: 8:00am – 4:00pm, Tuesday, Thursday: 8:00am – 3:30pm and Wednesday: 8:00am – 5:00pm (30-minute lunch break each day)
- Hours: 37.5 hours per week
- Apprenticeship Training: Online apprenticeship training supported by skilled tutors
- Qualification: Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
- Location: 24 St James Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, West Midlands, B15 2NX
- Start: September 2026
The Role
As a Teaching Assistant Apprentice, you will work closely with the Year 2 class teacher to support teaching, learning and pupil wellbeing. You will help create a positive and engaging learning environment where children feel supported, valued and inspired to achieve their full potential.
You will support individuals and small groups of pupils, assist with classroom organisation, monitor children's progress and contribute to the wider life of the school through events, trips and daily activities.

Main Duties
- Support the class teacher in planning and delivering engaging learning activities
- Provide learning support to individual pupils and small groups
- Assist with monitoring pupils' reading and academic progress
- Help maintain accurate pupil records, observations and assessments
- Build positive relationships with pupils and their families
- Prepare classroom resources and learning materials
- Set up and tidy learning activities and classroom environments
- Support classroom organisation and behaviour management
- Assist with classroom displays, photocopying and general administration
- Support the safe and effective use of ICT within learning
- Assist with administering and invigilating assessment activities where appropriate
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the school
- Supervise pupils during playtimes, lunchtimes and school activities
- Attend school trips, educational visits and special events
- Attend staff meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities
- Maintain confidentiality and follow safeguarding, health and safety, GDPR and school policies at all times
- Contribute positively to the wider life and ethos of West House School
- Undertake any other reasonable duties to support children's learning and wellbeing as directed by the Headmaster or senior leaders
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, caring and reliable with a genuine passion for supporting young children's learning and development. They will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a positive attitude and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Skills and Experience
- Commitment to completing a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
- GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above - ESSENTIAL
- Experience of working with young children in either a paid or voluntary capacity
- Good understanding of child development and learning
- Knowledge of behaviour management strategies
- Awareness of safeguarding, equality, diversity and GDPR requirements
- Good ICT skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to explain learning clearly and effectively
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Flexible, patient and positive approach
- Commitment to ongoing training and continuous professional development
- Clear spoken English to support pupils, including those with speech and language needs

Training and Development
As an apprentice, you will receive a combination of on-the-job training and formal learning, including:
- Completion of a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
- Regular mentoring and support from experienced school staff
- Ongoing progress reviews and development meetings
- Practical training to develop classroom practice, safeguarding knowledge and professional skills
Training and Qualification
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end? The successful candidate will obtain a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard qualification.
