About the Role
Lighting Engineer (Engineer to Principal Engineer)
At WSP, you can always find opportunities to grow and do what matters to you. Join the Lighting and Energy Solutions (L&ES) business, which provides comprehensive lighting and electrical engineering design and advisory services.
Key Responsibilities
- Production of detailed design layouts, engineering detailed drawings, and support documentation in accordance with WSP’s Quality Assurance and client requirements.
- Preparation of feasibility reports, technical notes, optioneering reports, and specifications.
- Engagement with luminaire, column, controls, and electrical manufacturers.
- Coordination with contractors, including site support, responding to RFIs (Requests for Information) and TQs (Technical Queries).
- Completion of non-intrusive site visits to support lighting assessments and site clearance drawings.
- Support in developing project proposals and progress against agreed programme milestones and budget constraints.
- Liaison with Local Authority and Strategic Road Network clients to build strong working relationships.
- Analysis/evaluation of client briefs, and provision of expert guidance and tailored support.
- Liaison within the Lighting and Energy Solutions team and wider multidisciplinary design teams, stakeholders, and clients.
- Mentorship of junior team members and early career professionals.
- Representation of WSP within the lighting industry to foster industry relationships and drive business development.
Location
The team operates across the UK, with key offices in: Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hertfordshire, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Southampton, and Brighton.

Requirements
All Lighting Engineer Roles
- Technical Proficiency:
- Proficient in Lighting Realität or Dialux lighting design software and AutoCAD.
- Strong understanding of external lighting standards, guidance, legislation, and regulations.
- Awareness of electrical design and lighting maintenance operations.
- Ability to demonstrate lighting design competence from conception to issue for construction using Lighting Realität or Dialux and AutoCAD.
- Work Skills:
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, with excellent communication and organisational abilities.
- Coaching and mentoring skills for junior members of the team.
- Experience working with Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.
- Good knowledge of external lighting products.
- Membership of a relevant professional organisation (e.g., IEng / CEng status for senior roles or pursuit of this for junior roles).
For Senior Roles
- Experience in leading projects and teams, with managerial confidence.
- Risk awareness, including Construction Design and Management (CDM) and financial risk, with the ability to manage or mitigate effectively.
- Enhanced ability to coach, develop, and support junior team members.
