Our Lighting and Energy Solutions (L&ES) business provides comprehensive lighting and electrical engineering design and advisory services for all aspects of light, lighting, and low-voltage energy. We work with clients across the public and private sectors, both locally and internationally.

A Little More About Your Role

We have a number of opportunities for Lighting Engineers, from Engineer up to Principal Engineer level, to provide support to our Local Government and Strategic Road Network capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production of detailed design layouts, engineering detailed drawings, and support documentation in accordance with WSP’s Quality Assurance and client requirements.
  • Preparation of feasibility reports, technical notes, optioneering reports, and specifications.
  • Engagement with luminaire, column, controls, and electrical manufacturers.
  • Coordination with contractors, including:
    • Site support
    • Responding to RFI’s (Requests for Information) and TQ’s (Technical Queries)
  • Completion of non-intrusive site visits to support the development of lighting assessments and site clearance drawings.
  • Support in the development of project proposals and progress against agreed programme milestones and budget constraints.
  • Liaison with Local Authority and Strategic Road Network clients, building strong working relationships.
  • Analysis/evaluation of client briefs and offering expert guidance and tailored support.
  • Liaison with:
    • Colleagues within the Lighting and Energy Solutions team
    • Wider multi-disciplinary design teams
    • Stakeholders and clients
  • Guiding junior team members and Early Career Professionals on their career journeys.
  • Representing WSP within the lighting industry, fostering industry relationships and driving business development.

What We Look for in Candidates

Core Requirements

  • Proficient in the use of Lighting Reality/Dialux lighting design software and AutoCAD.
  • Strong understanding of external lighting standards, guidance, legislation, and regulations.
  • Good awareness and understanding of electrical design and lighting maintenance operations.
  • Demonstrable competency in lighting design from conception through to issue for construction, with experience in Lighting Reality/Dialux or AutoCAD.
  • Ability to:
    • Work independently and in a team, with excellent communication and organisational skills.
    • Coach and develop junior team members.
  • Experience in the Local Government or Strategic Road Network sectors.
  • Good knowledge of external lighting products.
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation, or (for junior roles) working towards IEng/CEng status; (for senior roles), having achieved IEng/CEng status.

Additional Requirements for Senior Roles

  • Experience in leading projects and teams, with confidence in a management capacity.
  • Strong risk awareness, particularly around:
    • CDM (Construction Design and Management)
    • Financial risk, with the ability to manage or mitigate accordingly.
  • Ability to coach and develop junior team members.
