Consultant Physicians in Geriatric Medicine – North Wales

Job Overview

The Consultant Physicians within Geriatric Medicine at Glan Clwyd Hospital are responsible for managing inpatient services across multiple sites, including Colwyn Bay Hospital, Denbigh Infirmary, and Holywell Community Hospital. Regular outpatient clinics are held at Colwyn Bay and Holywell Community Hospitals.

Key features include:

  • A 24-bedded Care of The Elderly (COTE) Ward (Ward 1) in Glan Clwyd Hospital, supported by Specialist Registrars, GP trainees, Internal Medicine trainees, and Foundation YearDoctors.
  • Llandudno General Hospital has specialised Care of the Elderly units supported by Advanced Nurse Practitioners and a GP trainee.
  • A Locum Consultant Geriatrician provides clinical input to Enhanced Care Services in North and South Denbighshire.
  • Research activities within the department focus on Parkinson’s Disease, with published publications, supported by a Specialist Movement Disorder Consultant and three Parkinson’s Disease Specialist Nurses.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant input to 10–12 beds at Glan Clwyd Hospital (Ward 1) alongside other geriatric consultants.
  • Participate in ward Board Rounds to discuss patient management and discharge plans, in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals).
  • Manage specialist interests in Frailty, Stroke, and Community Interface Geriatrics.
  • Conduct outpatient clinics, including two new and five follow-up appointments, following a standard template.
  • Oversee shared community hospital beds with colleague consultants.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Professional Training

  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) or equivalent

Clinical Experience

  • Extensive experience in General and Geriatric Medicine
  • Clinical audit experience

Teaching

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
  • Experience teaching therapy and nursing staff

Skills

  • Leadership ability within a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal skills for maintaining professional relationships
  • Proficiency in IT tools

Desirable Criteria

Qualifications & Professional Training

  • Listing on the GMC Specialist Register
  • Higher degree (e.g., MD/PhD)
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals

Clinical Experience

  • Experience in Frailty, Stroke, or Community Geriatrics preferably
  • Other subspecialty experience (e.g., Palliative Care)

Teaching

  • Teaching qualifications (e.g., formal teaching credits or certifications)
