Locum Consultant Anaesthetist - General/Orthopaedics
Consultant Anaesthetists (Fixed-Term Locum Posts – 12 Months)
Full Time / Part Time / Flexible Working
About the Role
Applications are invited for dynamic locum Consultant Anaesthetist positions on a fixed-term basis (12 months). Successful candidates will contribute to our rapidly expanding organisation, providing general and regional anaesthesia across multiple surgical specialties—including orthopaedics, general surgery, and colorectal surgery.
A key focus of the role lies within our highly successful national orthopaedic programme, heavily supported by:
- Enhanced Recovery initiatives
- An expansive robotic surgical programme
Our Department of Orthopaedics is the largest arthroplasty unit in the United Kingdom, responsible for:
- Over 30% of NHS Scotland’s hip and knee replacement procedures
- 45% of these surgeries within West of Scotland hospitals
This is an exciting opportunity to join NHS Golden Jubilee University Hospital as part of a £80m Scottish Government investment, driving growth in orthopaedic and general surgical services:

- Orthopaedic activity will double
- General surgical activity will increase by 160%
- Theatre capacity will expand from 15 to 26 theatres (phased rollout between 2023–2025).
Key Responsibilities
The role will include (but is not limited to):
- Delivering anaesthetic services in theatre for multiple specialties
- Pre-assessment responsibilities
- Supporting the Acute Pain Service
- Participating in an on-call rota (specific details can be clarified upon enquiry)
Requirements
- Hold full GMC registration
- Be on the Specialist Register, or be eligible for admission within six months of the interview date
- Commitment to providing Flexible Working options (where applicable)
