Job Description
Job Title Fixed Term (1 year) Locum Breast Radiology Consultant
Position Overview
Applications are invited for a 1-year fixed term post to cover a period of maternity leave. The successful applicant will join a team of experienced and friendly breast radiologists, providing both symptomatic and screening breast services in a busy unit treating 700 patients with breast cancer annually. The radiology team is supported by:
- A Consultant Mammographer
- 3 Advanced Practitioners
- A comprehensive diagnostic service including tomosynthesis, VAE (Vacuum Assisted Sc-fi*-ipt>** and MRI**, as well as magnetic seed localisations to support our oncoplastic surgical service.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake symptomatic and screening breast work across the unit, working within a single-site organisation at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.
- Share training, supervision, and support with colleagues for radiographers and ultrasonographers—including skill mix training.
- Provide training for Portsmouth Radiology Training Scheme Speciality Trainees and other Wessex-based rotating SPRs (Staff Grade Radiologists).
- Core job plan: 9 DCC (Direct Clinical Care) sessions and 1 SPA (Supporting Programme Activity). Additional time may be available through consultation with the Clinical Director, based on departmental and personal requirements.
- Engage in regular job planning reviews.

- GI (Gastrointestinal)
- GU (Genitourinary)

Portsmouth Hospitals is a large teaching hospital, offering most subspecialities and housing one of the largest research departments in the south. It is the regional centre for renal transplant, renal services, and bariatric surgery and is home to Portsmouth Medical School.

Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC Registration with an active licence to practice
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register:
- Via CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) (proposed date must be within 6 months)
- Or CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration)
- Or Equivalent European Community Rights
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR), or equivalent.
Subspecialty Experience (Desirable)
- Management course or experience
- Fellowship-level training
Clinical Experience
Essential
- Quality Assured Film Reader status
- Responsible Assessor in breast screening assessment clinics
- Participation in 2WW referrals
- Participation in cold symptomatic services (problem-solving, further biopsy guidelines)
Desirable
- MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) preparation, participation, and presentation
- Surveillance mammogram reporting
- Breast MRI reporting
- CT breast staging reporting
Skills
Essential
- High-standard professional skills in clinical radiology
- Demonstrable basic management skills
- Excellent time and organisational management
- Proficient computer literacy
Desirable
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals, including national/international conference presentations
- Clinical research training and significant research project involvement
- Advanced computer skills
- Awareness of service redesign principles
Knowledge and Competencies
- Demonstrate up-to-date clinical knowledge
- Apply evidence-based practice
- Strong IT skills
- Effective, confident communication and presentation skills
- Willingness to engage with work outside the specialty
