Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and most progressive hepatology services in Southern England. Based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, the successful candidate will become part of a dynamic and highly supportive Gastroenterology and Hepatology department comprising 16 consultants with expertise spanning hepatology, advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. The consultant team is supported by a strong multidisciplinary workforce, including seven registrars, three endoscopy clinical fellows and a dedicated hepatology nursing team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, creating a collaborative environment focused on delivering outstanding patient care and service innovation.

Portsmouth's hepatology service has grown significantly over the last decade and is now recognised as a regional leader in liver disease management. The department offers a comprehensive range of specialist services, including established liver transplant links with the Royal Free Hospital, a joint transplant satellite clinic, TIPSS provision, locoregional therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma, and nationally recognised services for alcohol-related liver disease, MASLD/MASH and hepatitis C. As a core member of the Wessex Hepatology Operational Delivery Network, the team is actively involved in delivering advanced therapies and driving service development. With a thriving clinical trials programme, strong research support and a commitment to developing individual subspecialty interests, this role offers an outstanding opportunity for a hepatologist looking to contribute to an innovative, ambitious and expanding service.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in Gastroenterology (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights (for Consultant role)
  • Wide experience of Hepatology and Gastroenterology
  • Certified training in upper GI endoscopy

Desirable

  • Sub-specialty accreditation in Hepatology
  • Higher Degree (e.g. MD/PhD)
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in General Internal Medicine (proposed date must be within 6 months)
  • Experience of service development
