University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a fantastic opportunity to join their team on a Locum Consultant role in Paediatric Intensive Care (PICU).


Key Details

  • Job Title: PICU Locum Consultant
  • Start Date: 2nd September 2026
  • Contract Type: Fixed-term
  • Duration: 11 months
  • Purpose: Covering maternity leave

Main Responsibilities

This post is an ideal role for a Locum Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care at Southampton General Hospital, spanning from September 2026 to August 2027. The candidate will be specifically required to have:

  • Significant experience in:

    • Paediatric cardiac surgery,
    • Renal replacement therapies,
    • Advanced ventilatory support (e.g., inhaled nitric oxide),
    • Extracorporeal life support (ECMO), and
    • Critical care transport medicine.
  • Expertise in managing:

    • Severe traumatic head injuries,
    • Complex patients with multiple organ failure.

Department Overview

SouthernPICU is a 16-bedded intensive care unit, serving Wessex Region, with specialised services in:

  • Paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery (approx. 300 operations annually),
  • Critical care retrieval service (with 550 episodes/year),
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support (VV & VA modalities),
  • Major trauma centre (dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department).

Notable Achievements:

  • Consistently low SMRs, high bed efficiency.

Clinical Duties & Expectations

Location: Southampton General & Oxford Retrieval Teams.

Core Tasks:

  • Managing patients across key subspecialties:
    • Cardiology/cardiac surgery, neurology/neurosurgery, nephrology, haematology, respiratory, gastroenterology,...
    • Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • SORT second-call responsibilities (critical care retrieval).
  • Training and supervision in:
    • Medical governance, continuing medical education, undergraduate/postgraduate teaching.

Research, Teaching & Administrative Duties

Training & Research

  • Undergraduate Education:
    • Supervising clinical tutorials, personal tutor roles, and Medical Study Projects.
  • Postgraduate Support:
    • Educating Nurses, ACP's, and medical staff.
  • Support/Supervision Available: For resident doctors.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Managing patient care, departmental operations, and clinical documentation.

Qualifications, Experience & Criteria

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualifications:

    • MBBS or equivalent qualification,
    • GMC registration with practice licence.
  • Specialist Know-how & Training:

    • MRCPCH/FRCA or equivalent certification
    • Level 3 Safeguarding Training (valid)
    • Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) certification (valid)
    • Approved RCPCH training (minimum 2 years犇 Includes ECMO expertise/approvals)
    • Experience in congenital heart disease management & paediatric internet interventions.
  • Clinical & Teaching Experience:

    • 6 months anaesthetic training OR existing PICM consultant registrar (trained via PDF pathways).
    • Experience in acute transport medicine, trauma, critical care outreach, and cardiac arrest management.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Holding current haematology and anaesthetics speciality registers.
  • Valid ECG interpreting training.
  • Higher degree, familiar with laboratory-based research (if applicable).
  • Neonatal intensive care knowledge.
