Sabbatical Leave Opportunities – Consultant Nephrologist (General Medicine) (M+Breaks) – £113,565 – £150,569
Job Summary
Applications are warmly invited from energetic and enthusiastic candidates to join our team at Heartlands Hospital covering a one-year Sabbatical leave. The successful applicant will work alongside 12 Consultant Nephrologists, providing integrated Renal Services for people living in East Birmingham and its surroundings, as part of the wider Nephrology department at University Hospitals of Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).
UHB is the largest single NHS provider of nephrology care in the UK, with a catchment population of 1.7 million serving one of the UK’s most diverse communities—including areas with high incident and prevalent rates of end-stage renal disease. At Heartlands, we deliver:
- Comprehensive renal services locally and regionally
- Over 470 haemodialysis (HD), over 100 peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients
- Follow-up care for ~200 kidney transplant patients
- Regional Hypertension service across UHB’s footprint
We operate a multi-disciplinary model, with many CNS-led clinics. Opportunities for procedural work (including PD tube placement, biopsies, line supervision), education, and research exist for interested candidates. While sub-specialty interests are encouraged, they are not required.
Main Duties, Tasks & Responsibilities
Clinical Care:
Contribute to general medical care within our footprint. Optional acute internal medicine sessions are available for those wishing to maintain a front-line medical commitment.

- Inpatient duties: Supported by 2 duty consultants, resulting in ~1:5 inpatient commitment.
- Out-of-hours cover: 1:12 ratio, including overnight (non-resident) and weekend (resident/non-resident) sessions (Monday–Friday 6:30pm–7:30am; weekends 24/7).
- Middle-grade lead support: Covered 7 days/week, 8am–8pm as needed.
Renal-Specific Role:
- Critical component: Involvement in Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) care (candidates with PD interest strongly encouraged).
- Outpatient clinics: Spread across 3 sites (Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull).
- Sub-specialty clinics: Potential involvement in Hypertension, Advanced Kidney Care, and Renal Biopsy services (for experienced/suitable candidates).
- Procedural work: Biopsy/line supervision, PD catheter placement (available for interested/experienced applicants).
Education & Research:
- Research-active unit: Participation in various study topics.
- Clinical supervision: Led by all departmental colleagues.
- Weekly meetings mandatory: Educational sessions, M+M (Mortality & Morbidity meetings), Renal clinic education.

Job Description
The selected candidate will:
- Work collaboratively with the Consultant team to ** drive departmental development**.

Person Specification
Qualifications (Essential):
✅ GMC registration (current) ✅ CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) in Renal Medicine OR CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) ✅ CCT in General Medicine OR CESR ✅ DBS check ( adjoined to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act compliance) ✅ Certificate of Sponsorship (open to Skilled Worker Visa applicants)
Additional Requirements:
- A UK professional registration mandated.
- Fluent English (appropriate to role).
Salary & Contract:
- £113,565–£150,569/year (Hospital Medical & Dental Band, Band 8a/8c)
- Fixed-term contract (12 months)
- Full-time, standard NHS working hours
