General Summary

The Office Nurse provides compassionate, high-quality patient care in a clinic setting, adhering to Holston Medical Group’s quality standards, policies, procedures, and customer service expectations. As a core member of the clinical team, the Office Nurse takes initiative to identify patient needs, supports clinical excellence, and enhances the patient experience. Key responsibilities include:

  • Taking and documenting vital signs (electronic and paper-based)
  • Administering medications
  • Acting as a Health Educator under the Patient-Centered Medical Home model
  • Prepping patients for exams and liaising with providers

Main Responsibilities

  • Patient First Service

    • Assist patients with needs using a patient-first approach
    • Greet patients with compassion and warmth
    • Conduct compassionate patient interactions with a friendly demeanor
  • Administrative and Medication Tasks

    • Accurately assess and record vital signs in the electronic database
    • Prepare patients for examinations
    • Pick up vaccines and medications as needed
    • Mail normal lab results to patients and notify them of abnormal lab findings

  • Clinical and Operational Care

    • Act as a Health Educator, explaining procedures under the Patient-Centered Medical Home model
    • Obtain prior authorizations and pre-certifications for diagnostic/procedural tests
    • Dispose of contaminated healthcare supplies and sterilize medical instruments
    • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms and ensure supplies and equipment are proactively managed
    • Attend nurse meetings and educational sessions
    • Mentor new nursing staff and aid in their orientation
    • Ensure Health Department vaccination records are maintained (for pediatric patients)
    • Maintain clinical areas to meet site inspection standards
    • Conform to defibrillator, autoclave, and emergency cart maintenance
    • Conduct routine customer-checks (e.g., engage privately with patients every 10 minutes)
    • Discard biohazard waste and swap sharp disposal containers appropriately
  • Provider Support & Communication

    • Provide consistent updates to providers on patient needs
    • Escalate office concerns to the Nurse Manager and Regional Operations Manager
    • Ensure communication with all team members to protect patient needs
  • Compliance and Special Assignments

    • Respond to temporary requests by moving between offices as business needs dictate
    • Enroll patients in myHMG under direction.

Education/Experience/Knowledge

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • LPN license or MA certification (active in the state of employment)
  • 0–2 years of LPN experience
  • CPR certification (required)
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration mindset
  • Ability to learn new systems on-the-fly

  • Clear communication through oral and written methods
  • Visual attention (monitoring patient status and workspace hygiene)
  • Prioritization under frequent interruptions and time-sensitive tasks

  • Situational writing (occasional notes in health record systems)
  • Light color discrimination (important for equipment safety)
  • Independence and ability to adjust workflow efficiently
