Job Description: Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (12 Month Secondment)

Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist for a 12-month secondment (37.5 hours per week). This role requires a minimum of 2 years’ cancer or respiratory nursing experience. Unsuccessful candidates from previous applications need not reapply.


About the Role

The Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care for patients across the lung cancer pathway—from local and regional areas—supporting diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work under the guidance of the Lead Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Collaborate closely with respiratory physicians, thoracic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and allied health professionals.
  • Provide expert clinical, emotional, and informational support to patients and their families.
  • Work seamlessly within the lung cancer clinical nursing team and established wider hospital/community care systems.
  • Promote patient empowerment, ensuring informed decision-making about care and treatment.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

✔ Registered Adult Nurse (NMC, relevant register) ✔ Degree or equivalent (120 credits at Level 6 or higher) ✔ Post-registration qualification or equivalent experience in cardiothoracic or respiratory medicine, oncology, or a related speciality. ✔ Current competency across Band 5 preceptorship requirements verified. ✔ Experience supporting and managing learners in practice. ✔ Experience supporting colleagues to enhance practice-based skills. ✔ Extensive experience in specialist respirator or oncology/nursing practice. ✔ Awareness of current challenges in acute healthcare.

Desirable Criteria

🔵 Enrolled on an MSc programme with completed approved Healthcare Practice Assessor (HTPA) Competencies. 🔵 Count as a Practice Assessor or be in advanced learning/progression. 🔵 Counselling/psychological support training preferred. 🔵 Palliative care education experienced.
