Overview of the Role

This is a non-operational but critical role within an establishment. The Instructor will provide supervision, guidance, and structured work experience to prisoners in non-specialist workshops where no qualifications are awarded.

  • This is not a training-focused role designed for prisoners to gain post-level qualifications.
  • Specialist workshops require a Specialist Production Instructor (separate role).
  • Despite being classified as non-operational, the role involves workshop management and prisoner conduct responsibilities.
  • Rotational role (conducted on a temporary basis when required).

Key Purpose

Ensure prison workshops operate as safe, disciplined, and constructive environments, mirroring external employment standards where practical.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining strict security, discipline, and security protocols at all times.
  • Ad-hoc temporary supervision of prisoners in specialised workshops (short-term, 1–5 days) where HMPPS seeks flexible support.
  • Supporting the operational delivery of HMPPS workshops, monitoring performance, and maintaining quality outputs.

Main Responsibilities & Duties

General Workshop & Pr embargoisoner Roles

  • Participate in prisoner selection for workshops.
  • Conduct induction sessions training in:
    • Health and safety.
    • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
    • Secure equipment usage (machinery, tools).
    • Storage and accountability of resources.
  • Monitor equipment to ensure security and compliance.
  • Develop tailored training to meet individual prisoner needs while adhering to contractual goals.

Pr officeramento Management

  • Supervise and manage prisoners decently, safely, and securely.
    • Conduct site searches (metal detector or rub-down).
    • Monitor performance, discipline, and development.
  • Control discipline and freedom within the workshop environment.

Operational & Task Leadership

  • Administer work schedules and enforce targets/quality standards.
  • Review products and outputs regularly.
  • Mandate quality checks to meet contractual specifications.
  • Allocate tasks, ensure مواد materials requisitioning for goals.
  • Track and approve payments/hours worked (including piece rates).

Compliance & Reporting

  • Health and Safety compliance: Formal risk/assessments for workshops + tasks.
    • Contribute to workplace safety planning.
  • Support case management reports, including:
    • ACCT forms (Assessment, Care in Custody & Teamwork).
    • IEP reports and other mandatory documentation.
  • Evidence-based facilitation of parole/planning, security, and release processes.
  • Provide violence reduction and security incident reports.

Administrative & Communication Responsibilities

  • Prepare relevant documentation for verification.
  • Manage and update HMPPS occupational data.
  • Maintain radio-channel communication per establishment security policy.
  • Organise participation in meetings/development sessions.

Contractual Information

Working Hours & Allowances

  • 37-hour standard week (conditionally applies to unsocial hours entitlement).
