Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Analyst

About the Role

Sumer is the fastest-growing accountancy practice in the UK, dedicated to empowering small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) and supporting communities across the UK and Ireland. This is an exciting opportunity to join as Sumer builds its ambitious growth strategy in its early developmental stages.

Business Model & Background

Operating under a buy-and-build "Hub and Spoke" model, Sumer merges the strengths of leading regional practices with the scaling power, technology, and breadth of expertise of a national network.

M&A sits at the core of Sumer’s business strategy, driving its expansion. As a key member of a small but high-impact M&A team, this role will focus on executing M&A opportunities—nationally and internationally—while contributing to a cutting-edge, collaborative culture.


Role Overview

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Management & Strategy: Research, analyse, and compile financial and operational data from multiple sources to help shape M&A strategy.
  • Data Quality & Integrity: Enhance, maintain, and ensure accuracy, consistency in supporting M&A activities and KPI performance.
  • Target Evaluation: Collaborate with the M&A team to assess potential acquisition targets against defined criteria and KPIs.
  • Board Reporting: Produce well-structured, compelling executive-level reports on acquisition strategy, and monitor acquired businesses’ ongoing performance.
  • Due Diligence: Assist in financial due diligence by analysing potential acquisition targets’ operations and financials.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Develop and maintain key external relationships, including:
    • Sumer’s Exco Board and executive leadership
    • Third-party introducers
    • Management teams of potential acquisition targets

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

  • M&A Experience: Demonstrated track record in M&A-related roles (e.g., transactions, corporate finance).
  • Finance Certifications/Degrees: Preferred credentials include ACA or ACCA qualification or equivalent (e.g., relevant bachelor’s/master’s degree).
  • Analytical Skills:
    • Proficiency in data modelling and data analysis, particularly using Microsoft Excel and other visualisation tools.
    • Ability to translate complex financial data into clear reports, crafting polished drafts.
  • Individual Contribution & Leadership:
    • Ability to coach junior analysts in financial analysis and due diligence report preparation.
  • Eagerness & Business Acumen:
    • Passionate about M&A and supporting acquisition activities.
    • Commercially minded, adaptable, proactive, and excels in fast-moving environments.
