Working Hours
36 Hours per week (4-day work week and WFH available)

The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Advanced Machine Design Engineer to join the Mechatronics & Machines Team in Coventry.
This is an exciting and significant role for a highly capable mechanical design engineer with a strong background in machinery, automation, and manufacturing equipment design.
You will take concepts from research and development (R&D) through to detailed design, commissioning, and project delivery. Delivering innovative engineering projects for diverse customers and industrial sectors.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Independently delivering technical work packages on larger engineering projects.
- Serving as Technical Lead for smaller projects, ensuring delivery meets quality, budget, and timescale.
- Conducting research, concept generation, feasibility studies, and detailed machine design.
- Producing technical drawings and documentation in compliance with relevant standards, including BS8888.
- Supporting commissioning activities and ensuring compliance with Machinery Directive (EU) & CE/UKCA requirements.
- Identifying, specifying, and delivering innovative manufacturing technologies aligned with TRL 3+ (Technology Readiness Level) and MRL 3+ (Manufacturing Readiness Level).
- Collaborating closely with:
- Customers
- Industrial partners
- Multidisciplinary engineering teams

About You
You are degree-qualified (BEng, MEng, BSc, or MSc) in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline, with 5-10 years’ experience in:
- Mechanical engineering
- Manufacturing engineering
- Machinery & automation
Proven Experience & Required Skills

Design expertise in:
- Machinery
- Automation systems
- Manufacturing equipment
- Complex mechanical products

Comprehensive understanding of the entire engineering lifecycle—from concept to delivery and commissioning.

Ability to produce technical drawings compliant with BS8888 standards.

Working knowledge of (or proficiency with):
- Siemens NX or SolidWorks
- 3D CAD packages

Strong understanding of:
- Engineering materials & manufacturing techniques
- Industry standards and regulations

Experience with:
- Specifying and engineering pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- Electrical & electronic components used in machine design
- Sensors, instrumentation, and data logging

Familiarity with Machinery Directive and requirements for CE/UKCA certification.

Excellent problem-solving and risk management capabilities.

- Technical reporting
- Presentation skills
- Stakeholder engagement

Practical and hands-on approach with a willingness to support:
- Prototyping
- Build processes
- Commissioning activities
Desirable Skills & Knowledge
- PLC hardware experience
- Expertise in Arduino / Raspberry Pi platforms
- Basic/advanced programming skills
