Machine Shop Operator – Shot Blast Units
Location: Onsite, Ilkeston, Derbyshire
Hours: Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 17:30 Term: Temporary to Permanent role Rate: £12.71 per hour (before going permanent)
About The Role
We are seeking a hands-on Machine Shop Operator to join a well-established, nationally operating specialist in non-mechanical plant hire and associated support services.
This business serves the construction, civil engineering, infrastructure, utilities, and industrial sectors, taking pride in product quality, compliance, and operational excellence. A key opportunity has emerged for a meticulous, practical worker to join one of their UK depot locations in maintaining and operating specialist machinery.

What You’ll Be Doing

Operating specialist machinery, including:
- Road Form Machine
- Shot Blast Units
- Trench Sheet Press

Advising technical or maintenance teams when required

Conducting daily repairs to road forms and trench sheets

Safely loading and unloading plant using a counterbalance forklift

Inspecting and pre-start checks on machinery to ensure safe operation

Maintaining machinery standards through:
- Monitoring and regulating grit levels
- Applying consistent lubrication
- Managing dust collectors

Performing grinding and welding tasks to repair road forms

Trimming trench sheets as needed

Applying mould oil and shrink-wrapping plant where required

General maintenance including pressure washing of plant

- Ensuring correct storage and stacking of all equipment
- Maintaining a clean, tidy, and compliant working area
Additional Responsibilities
- Strict adherence to PPE protocol—wearing and maintaining company-issued personal protective equipment (PPE) in clean and serviceable condition
- Actively contributing to yard procedures as required
What We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria
- Current and valid Counterbalance Forklift Certificate (compulsory)
- Strong hands-on experience in a machine shop, workshop, or similar environment
- Proven ability with grinding and welding
Key Competencies
- A methodical and safety-first attitude to all tasks
- Reliable and self-motivated, with a keen eye for detail
- Comfortable working within a small, collaborative depot team
