Machine Shop Manager – SailGP Technologies

SailGP Technologies is the high-performance design, engineering and manufacturing arm of SailGP, the global purpose-led sail racing championship. The Rolex SailGP Championship delivers thrilling races across iconic stadium locations worldwide using identical high-tech F50 catamarans, achieving speeds exceeding 100km/h. Since its founding in 2018, SailGP has grown into one of the world’s fastest-growing sports and entertainment properties, now in its sixth season.

Our decades of expertise in sail racing racing translates into advanced design, composites engineering, software, and data solutions. After operating in New Zealand since 2001, SailGP Technologies has relocated to Southampton, UK, where its state-of-the-art facility opened in Spring 2024.


Job Summary

We are seeking a Machine Shop Manager to lead an integrated engineering and manufacturing function, specialising in metallic and composite production for high-performance applications.

This leadership role combines:

  • Strategic manufacturing oversight, ensuring scalability and alignment with business objectives
  • Production and advanced manufacturing management, ideally from a high-tech sector such as motorsport, aerospace, or marine innovation
  • Technical leadership with hands-on experience managing multidisciplinary teams
  • Full department ownership, shaping future manufacturing strategy and driving operational efficiency

The Machine Shop Manager reports directly to the Director of SailGP Technologies. The role focuses on all machining functions (including CNC 3-axis, 5-axis, and manual machines) while overseeing: ✔ End-to-end delivery (procurement, quality inspection, stock control) ✔ High-precision components (metallic and composite)

Responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership: Define and execute a manufacturing strategy that balances in-house capability with outsourced supply chains, supporting growth, innovation, and scalability.
  • Production and quality management: Oversee metallic and composite component production, ensuring repeatability, efficiency, and quality across all processes.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration: Integrate engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and operations for seamless product development and industrialisation.
  • Continuous improvement: Drive initiatives to reduce lead times, optimise tooling, and enhance material efficiency.
  • Investment and capability development: Lead planning for new machining (e.g., Mazak CNC machines) and quality systems.
  • Daily operations management: Direct machining/fabrication teams to deliver high-performance components on budget, schedule, and specification.
  • Technical expertise: Act as a key decision-making authority, ensuring alignment with senior leadership and a culture of excellence.
  • Machine operation and programming:
    • Mazak systems:
      • QT250 lathe
      • VTC-530C 3-axis milling machine
      • CV5-500 5-axis milling machine
    • CMS ARES 5-axis machining centre (Ares 6026-PX5 with 6m travel)
  • Procurement & stock control: Manage raw materials and tools while maintaining budget adherence.
  • Quality assurance: Direct inspection functions to guarantee total precision and compliance.
  • Problem-solving: Lead low-volume machining and resolve complex technical challenges, applying expert problem-solving.

About You

Experience & Expertise

  • Proven expertise in machining within a modern manufacturing environment (preferably high-tech/motorsport/aerospace/marine).
  • Effective but not required:
    • Experience with CAD, manual machines, or welding
    • Machining titanium and exotic metals
  • Leadership in manufacturing/production: Strong track record from high-tech precision sectors.
  • Technical management skills covering:
    • Manufacturing processes (with CNC programming/capability)
    • Team leadership (both workshop-based and strategic)
  • Hands-on approach: Comfortable with direct problem-solving alongside team direction.
  • Team management: Successful history of leading machine shop teams and fostering collaboration.
  • Scalability expertise: Experience in scaling production processes to meet evolving operational demands.
