Machine Shop Manager
Machine Shop Manager, SailGP Technologies
SailGP Technologies is the high-performance design, engineering, and manufacturing arm of SailGP, the global, purpose-led SailGP Championship—the most electrifying racing on water. This high-stakes sport combines national teams, cutting-edge F50 catamarans (capable of exceeding 100km/h), and iconic stadium venues worldwide.
Since its founding in 2018, SailGP has grown as one of the world’s fastest-expanding sports and entertainment platforms. Building on decades of pioneering sailboat engineering, SailGP Technologies has relocated its new state-of-the-art facility to Southampton, UK, in Spring 2024.
About the Role
This strategic leadership position oversees an integrated engineering and manufacturing function, ensuring the delivery of high-performance, high-quality components through both metallic and composite processes.
The ideal candidate will combine:
- Proven experience in production and advanced manufacturing (preferably in high-tech, precision-driven sectors like motorsport, aerospace, or marine innovation).
- Strong technical leadership and hands-on expertise in managing multidisciplinary teams and scaling production systems.
- A track record of shaping manufacturing strategy within a dynamic organisational context.
This role reports to the Director of SailGP Technologies. Duties encompass every phase of machining—from procurement to quality inspection to stock control—ensuring seamless end-to-end delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Manufacturing Strategy
- Provide strategic direction for all machining functions, including manufacturing, testing, and product development, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Define and execute a forward-looking manufacturing strategy supporting growth, innovation, and scalability by optimising between in-house capabilities and outsourced supply chains.

Production & Quality Assurance
- Oversee high-precision metallic and composite component production, ensuring quality, repeatability, and efficiency.
- Tightly integrate engineering, manufacturing, procurement, and operations to streamline product development, innovate, and industrialise efficiently.
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement, driving initiatives to:
- Reduce lead times.
- Optimise tooling and resource allocation.
- Improve yield and material efficiency.
- Lead investment planning and capability development for CNC machining, composites machining, fixturing, and quality systems.
Team & Machine Shop Management
- Manage CNC 3-axis/5-axis and manual machining, including:
- Mazak machining: QT250 lathe, VTC-530C (3-axis), CV5-500 (5-axis).
- CNC Mazak & ARES programming: 5-axis machining (e.g., Ares 6026-PX5 with 6m travel).
- Direct daily operations of internal machining teams, adhering to performance, safety, and schedule benchmarks.
- Oversee departmental procurement & stock control, maintaining budget adherence while optimising resource allocation.
Technical & Quality Expertise
- Direct the quality assurance and inspection function to guarantee total precision and technical compliance for every component.
- Lead low-volume component machining, troubleshoot complex technical challenges through advanced problem-solving.

About You
Essential Experience
- Demonstrable and relevant experience with machining in a modern manufacturing environment.
- Proven leadership experience in manufacturing and production, ideally within high-tech sectors such as:
- Motorsports
- Aerospace
- Marine technology
- Strong technical grounding in metallic manufacturing processes, including:
- CNC machining (programming & operation).
- Hands-on management of machine shop teams and cross-functional collaboration.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with CAD tools, manual machine tools, and welding.
- Machining expertise with titanium and other exotic metals.
- Prior experience managing multi-axis CNC machines.
- Scaling production processes and systems while maintaining quality and repeatability.
