Machine Shop Technician
Nikon X-Tek Systems is a leader in the design and manufacture of X-Ray CT Systems for industrial applications with a well-established global customer base.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic Machine Shop Technician to work on site at our facility in Tring, Hertfordshire and to help us deliver the company’s vision and long-term success.
What is your role?
To support research and development of precision components in close collaboration with engineers. This hands-on role involves prototyping and short production runs to transform engineering designs into accurate, high-quality parts. You will review drawings with engineers and share practical guidance on design for manufacture (DFM) to improve producibility.
What are your key areas of responsibility?
Manufacture and Machining
- Manufacture prototype and low volume production parts for industrial X-Ray machines using a variety of materials and machines.
- Program, set and run 3 and 4 axis mills; preferably experienced with Mazak CNC mill with Mazatrol or ISO programming or a Hurco CNC mill using Winmax programming.
- Program, set and run a 2 axis CNC lathe, preferably experienced with Mazak Mazatrol programming.
- Conversant with Hypermill CadCam or similar.
- Support design and new part development from early concept through to feedback after completion.
- Support supplier collaboration as needed, incl. off-site visits.

Quality and Continuous Improvement
- Work to tight tolerances, ensuring all components conform to drawing and specification.
- Able to inspect own work using precision measuring equipment.
- Contribute to process improvements to enhance tool life, reduce waste, and improve machining efficiency.
- Maintain ISO 9001 quality principles and 5S standards within the machine shop.
Health, Safety and Environment
- Adhere to all site safety policies, including PPE, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
- Maintain a high level of housekeeping and organisation within the machine shop.
- Actively identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with the Team Leader to prioritise workload.
- Share technical expertise with the wider engineering team.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, customer focus, collaboration, integrity, and continuous improvement in line with company values.

Essential
- Apprentice level trained Machinist, and / or a minimum of 5 years’ experience within a dynamic precision workshop environment.
- Proven experience programming, setting and operating CNC machine tools.
- Excellent ability to interpret engineering drawings and geometric tolerances, and able to provide feedback.
- Confident communicator with a proactive, self-driven, team ethos and collaborative approach.
- Committed to quality, safety, and continuous improvement with an internal and external customer focus.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with peers and support teams.
