Package

£44,000 – £55,000 (depending on suitability, qualifications & level of experience)

Working Pattern

  • 9-day fortnight (every other Friday off)

Join AWE’s Machine Tool Engineering (MTE) team, where you’ll contribute to cutting-edge, bespoke engineering projects across a range of highly specialised facilities. Gain unique opportunities to work on the full lifecycle of machine tools—from installation and commissioning to maintenance, optimisation, and advanced fault-finding, while developing expertise in innovation and machine tool design.


What You’ll Be Doing

As a Machine Tool Engineer at AWE, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring the reliability of nationally vital machinery. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering high-quality maintenance and servicing for complex machinery
  • Diagnosing, designing, and resolving faults across:
    • Electrical & mechanical systems
    • Pneumatic & hydraulic systems
  • Supporting installations, disassembly/reassembly, and precision alignments
  • Acting as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on Capital & Facility-led projects
  • Providing technical analysis, reporting, and continuous improvement
  • Implementing modifications compliant with project & engineering requirements
  • Ensuring strict adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards
  • Mentoring apprentices and junior team members
  • Collaborating with capital projects, applying EU Machinery Safety Directive and related standards

Who We’re Looking For

AWE seeks proactive engineers with a passion for precision engineering, problem-solving, and innovation.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Confirmed expertise in:
    • Machine tool maintenance, servicing, and modification
    • Fault-finding in multi-discipline engineering systems
    • Siemens controls, servo systems, and diagnostics
    • PLC programming and integrated machine tool innovations
    • Installation and precision alignment of mechanical assemblies
    • Technical writing (clear, accurate, and concise engineering documentation)
    • Communication & mentoring skills
  • Required qualifications & experience:
    • ONC/HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
    • Completed Engineering Apprenticeship (or equivalent experience)
    • Demonstrable knowledge of machine functionality and safety standards
    • Willingness to undergo AWE-specific training (including security clearance)
