Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care – Band 7 (Part-time, 22.5 hours per week)

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists within the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team for a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Palliative Care. This role involves delivering expert, holistic palliative care to patients and carers with life-limiting illnesses requiring specialist support for complex physical, psychological, and emotional needs.

You will operate across Barnsley neighbourhoods, providing advice, education, and personalised symptom management to enhance patients' quality of life. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assessing, planning, and delivering specialist palliative care
  • Offering highly specialised guidance to wider healthcare and social care teams
  • Developing and delivering palliative care education and mentoring clinicians
  • Acting as an independent non-medical prescriber
  • Providing leadership in complex bereavement support and care decisions

Relevant competencies will include: ✔ Advanced knowledge of palliative symptom management and medication ✔ Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills ✔ Strong communication and advocacy abilities ✔ Proven ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in interprofessional settings


Key Responsibilities

Care & Service Delivery

  • Manage a assigned caseload, providing holistic palliative and end-of-life support in community-based settings.
  • Deliver personalised, high-quality care tailored to patients' and families’ needs, ensuring care plans align with individual preferences and interests.
  • Conduct independent clinical assessments, using advanced symptom management, psychological, and emotional care strategies.
  • Serve as a key resource for complex symptom control, including pain relief, nutrition, and psychological support.
  • Monitor and support patients through bereavement, referring to specialist services where required.

Education & Mentorship

  • Plan and deliver multi-professional palliative care education programmes to enhance best practice.
  • Mentor and support newly qualified nurses and clinicians specialising in palliative care.
  • Contribute to service development and strategic planning, ensuring care standards align with Department of Health guidelines and Trust policies.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Lead multidisciplinary palliative care meetings, representing the role as a clinical specialist advisor.
  • Collaborate with neighbourhood teams, primary care, and social care partners to ensure seamless patient transitions.
  • Take responsibility for education, training, and ongoing staff development, facilitating a culture of reflective practice.
  • Provide leadership for palliative care services, including supervisory support for colleagues.

Key Skills & Knowledge

✅ Specialist Palliative Care — Deep understanding of current issues in palliative care, including symptom management, psychological bereavement, and ethical care. ✅ Education Development — Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating educational training packages. ✅ Clinical Guidance & Prescribing — Competency as an independent non-medical prescriber, with up-to-date CPD (Continuing Professional Development). ✅ Interprofessional Collaboration — Ability to work with doctors, social workers, GPs, allied health professionals (AHPs), and third-sector organisations.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • 1st-level Registered Nurse (Adult Nurse)
  • Degree-level qualification (minimum)
  • Diploma or higher in Specialist Palliative Care
  • Post-registration experience with emphasis on palliative/end-of-life/cancer care
  • Independent non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Proof of active professional registration

Desirable (Bonus) Qualifications

  • Counselling or oncology qualifications
  • Community nursing experience
  • Masters or advanced degree (Palliative Care-related)
  • Advanced Physical Assessment and Consultation Skills (APACS) training

Attributes & Administrative Duties

  • Current driving licence and reliable motor vehicle access (reasonable adjustments for disability-related mobility issues considered).
  • Professional organisation, leadership, and analytical skills
  • Experience working flexibly to manage unpredictable workloads

Professional Compliance & Support

  • Satisfactory Sickness Absence record over the previous two years.

  • Salary: £49,387–£56,515 per year (pro rata for 22.5 hours)
