Role: Mainframe IBM Z Technical Specialist

Location: Sheffield, UK (3 days hybrid)
Job Type: Contract Inside IR35
Note: No Sponsorship Provided

Role Overview

The IBM Z Technical Specialist – Db2 DBA is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting database technologies, ensuring high-quality service delivery aligned with defined timelines, scope, and best practices. The role focuses on maintaining and improving service levels, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, and driving automation to enhance operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and support database solutions to meet business and technical requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to service level agreements (SLAs) and internal policies.
  • Identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline repetitive processes.
  • Perform proactive analysis of daily operations to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.
  • Collaborate with global teams to implement best practices and support diverse environments.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of infrastructure and underlying technologies to ensure high service quality.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to facilitate knowledge sharing and training initiatives.

General Skills

  • Experience working on large-scale, complex projects in an architectural or technical leadership capacity.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve system issues or anomalies.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships across teams.
  • Prior experience in banking or financial services environments is advantageous.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Manage production support and release processes for database environments.
  • Design and define physical database structures.
  • Build, review, test, implement, and support database releases.
  • Configure and manage database security using RACF/ACF2, including access controls.
  • Develop and maintain high availability and replication setups.
  • Collaborate with application and infrastructure teams for seamless operations.
  • Support data migration and conversion activities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field (preferred).
  • 8–12 years of relevant experience in database administration and support.
  • Strong understanding of ITIL processes and best practices.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership capabilities.

Success Criteria

  • Strong analytical and problem management skills.
  • Ability to resolve issues efficiently and escalate when required.
  • Expertise in database performance monitoring, tuning, and optimization.
  • Experience in coordinating with development teams and managing technical initiatives.
  • Exposure to data center migrations and database environment upgrades.
