Overall purpose:
The Maintenance Assistant is a member of the Estates and Facilities team at the LMB and provides practical and reliable support for the day-to-day operation of our facilities on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Babraham Research Campus.
Key responsibilities/Main duties:
- Assist with maintaining a safe, functional, and well-presented workplace for researchers, support staff and visitors.
- Assist Estates colleagues, contractors, and other service teams in ensuring the smooth operation of the facilities.
- Support the Estates and Facilities team with day-to-day caretaking and undertake a wide range of general maintenance and repair tasks within laboratories, offices, communal spaces and animal holding environments across the LMB buildings. This includes, but is not limited to:
- basic carpentry, decorating, shelving installation and furniture assembly.
- replacing lamps, ceiling tiles, fixtures and fittings.
- minor plumbing activities.
- Maintain external areas including pathways, entrances, and communal outdoor spaces.
- Assist with office and laboratory moves as required.
- Support cleaning and clearing of workspaces, stores, plant areas and service yards, where required.
- Support routine building checks, plant room and equipment inspections, reporting issues, defects or concerns through the appropriate channels.
- Use the Estates helpdesk and/or maintenance management systems to update tasks and record works completed.
- Respond to reactive maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Assist with stock control and monitoring of materials, tools and consumables.
- Work in accordance with site health and safety procedures and policies.
- Support contractors and visitors working within the facilities and ensure safe working practices are followed.
Due to the operational nature of the work, this role requires full-time attendance on site.
Working relationships:
You will work as part of the Estates and Facilities team and will report to one of the Service Coordinators.
You will work closely with Estates colleagues, contractors, scientific staff, and support teams across the site.
PERSON REQUIREMENTS
Education / qualifications / training required:
Essential
- Recognised qualification in building maintenance, facilities maintenance, trade skills, or relevant equivalent experience carrying out general maintenance or caretaking duties within a facilities, estates, or maintenance environment.
Knowledge and experience required:
Essential
- Good practical skills with the ability to undertake a range of minor repair and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to work safely and follow health and safety procedures.
- Basic IT skills including use of Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Experience working within laboratory, scientific, healthcare, or animal facility environments.
- Experience using maintenance management or helpdesk systems.
- Basic understanding of building services or plant equipment.
- Experience undertaking routine plant inspections or compliance checks.
- Experience in painting and decorating, basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical work.

The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB)
The LMB is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology and has played an important role in the development of many new techniques, most notably X-ray crystallography of proteins, DNA sequencing and monoclonal antibodies.
The LMB has a clear goal of understanding biological processes at the molecular level, with the ultimate aim of using this knowledge to tackle specific problems in human health and disease. We aim to tackle difficult, long-term problems, which often require investment over many years.
There are four scientific Divisions - Structural Studies, Protein and Nucleic Acid Chemistry, Cell Biology and Neurobiology. However, scientific collaboration between the different Divisions is extensive. Scientists are well supported by excellent scientific facilities and by the LMB Operations Group which maintains the core infrastructure and services of the institute.
