Maintenance Assistant – Bolton (Skilled Trades / Maintenance)
Contract Type, Hours & Location
- Full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
- Salary: £12.87 per hour
- Location: St Catherines Care Home, 1-5 Peel Street, Bolton BL6 5QU
About the Role
Harbour Healthcare is seeking a dependable Maintenance Assistant to ensure the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of our care home in Bolton. Your responsibilities will include completing legal documentation, carrying out general building/fabric maintenance, managing grounds and emergencies—typically only for crises—under supervision.
While on-call only for true emergencies, successful candidates must demonstrate reliability and the ability to act promptly under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
General Maintenance & Facilities
- Complete and submit all legal documentation on time.
- Conduct, log, and action repairs or defect reports to:
- Appliances, furniture, and equipment
- Dammaged property or safety hazards (escalate to the Home Manager accordingly).
- Exterior maintenance:
- Secure trash/stimbabwe storage areas and garages
- Dislodge snow and grit walking paths, driveways, and pedestrian-accessible areas.
- Maintain gardens, flower beds, hanging baskets, and external signage/lighting at a high standard.
- Associated touch-up paintwork,eto preserve appearance and immediate safety.
- Safety-first compliance:
- Test, log, and maintain the fire alarm system, emergency lights, and fire call points weekly.
- Assure ventilation equipment and light fixtures are spotless.
- Swap defective light bulbs/diffusers and perform a prescribed test of all portable appliances.
- Water systems:
- Monitor and log water temperatures as instructed by procedures.
- Record-keeping:
- Use staff-reported defects to update a shared Maintenance Book before arranging repairs/replacements daily.
- Delivery logistics:
- Assist/supervise goods deliveries; inspect for accuracy and condition.

Communication
- Liaise with the Home Manager or delegated staff to prioritize required maintenance tasks.
- Attend staff/clients meetings as required.
Safety & Training
- Comply with manufacturer instructions for chemical storage and use (paints, varnish).
- Ensure proper ventilation during work and reinforce safe procedures for residents/staff.
- Report any accidents, illnesses, or failures to contain cleanliness/food policies to a supervisor immediately—whether your client, self, or colleague.
- Adhere to the care home’s Health & Safety Policy, Emergency and Fire procedures, and welfare regulations.
- Promote overall safe working practices across the unit.

Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Proven maintenance knowledge (essential knowledge of minor electrical, plumbing, joinery work, etc.).
- Full driving license (essential) and personal use of a vehicle.
- Team player skills, confident communication, and discretion in high-safety environments.
- Commitment to external professional checks:
- Police background checks and checks against the [Protected Places Operatives Vetting (POVA) List] (where applicable).
Desirable
- Experience with centre heating systems, laundry equipment, or domestic fixtures/taps (hot/cold water).
- Awareness of Health & Safety/Environmental Health regulations (up-to-date knowledge).
