Maintenance Engineer

Description

It is an exciting time to join c2c as we move into a new era of railway reform, aligning with Great British Railways (GBR) and the Department for Transport (DfT) to deliver a simpler, more connected and passenger-focused railway.

As Infrastructure Manager for all c2c stations under a 99-year FRI lease, the Asset Management team is responsible for the long-term safety, functionality and resilience of an extensive portfolio of Building, Civils and MEPF assets. The Maintenance Engineer provides the Asset team with in-house capability to:

  • Resolve reactive maintenance faults
  • Deliver minor project works
  • Provide value for money to the business and taxpayers
  • Directly improve passenger experience

The role will join an overall team of 4, bolstering the in-house capability of the asset team.


Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake inspection, fault-finding, maintenance, renewal and installation work, incorporating all aspects of building work, including:

    • Joinery
    • Plumbing
    • Brickwork
    • Roofing
    • Groundwork
    • Other general maintenance as directed Only undertake work you are trained and competent to perform.
  • Ensure all external contractors require and hold appropriate c2c-issued site access permits.

  • Vehicle, plant, tools, equipment, and materials management:

    • Check that items under your control are fit for use
    • Ensure proper use, storage, and disposal

  • Conduct work safely, adhering to safe systems of work, method statements, and relevant instructions with minimum disruption to customers and stakeholders.

  • Manage and direct work activities safely and efficiently, in line with all relevant standards.

  • Site-specific safety and risk management:

    • Prepare site-specific risk assessments with control measures
    • Review safe system of work documentation where necessary, in line with c2c’s Safety Management System
  • Deliver and maintain effective service to customers and stakeholders, prioritising safety and quality.

  • Quality control:

    • Monitor quality of work undertaken
    • Confirm assets remain compliant with standards
  • Record keeping:

    • Accurately report all work (completed/uncompleted)
    • Maintain CAFM system records as required
    • Store and register applicable material receipts
    • Maintain stock control as needed
  • Compliance and reporting:

    • Adhere to company policies and procedures
    • Proactively participate in c2c’s Close Call Reporting Procedure
    • Flag risks to the Facilities Manager and wider Asset Management team
  • Participate in development & training opportunities provided by the business.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Experience, Qualifications & Certifications Required

  • Experience in field-based maintenance engineering (preferred within railway environment, though not essential).
  • Working knowledge of basic maintenance activities related to building fabric, including but not limited to:
    • Plumbing
    • Bricklaying
    • Carpentry
    • Joinery
    • Painting & decorating
  • Must maintain competencies in related trade areas.

  • Active membership of the CITB Construction Skills Certification Scheme.

  • In-date training & competence certifications (preferable):

    • Emergency First Aid at Work
    • Manual Handling
    • Asbestos & Legionella Awareness
    • Working at Height
    • IPAF (Mobile Access Platforms)
    • PASMA (Prefabricated Access Towers)
    • CAT Scanning (categories 1-3 preferred)
    • Abrasive Wheels
    • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme)
  • Must hold:

    • Personal Track Safety (PTS) Competency (essential)
    • COSS (Control of Science Suppliers) competency) (desirable)
  • IOSH certification (desirable)

  • Soft Skills & Attributes:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to promote safety culture and ensure effective passenger communications.
  • Planning & Execution:

    • Ability to plan and deliver maintenance work
    • Draft work remit (with input from Asset Managers when required).
  • Computer Literacy:

    • Must be confident with computers
    • Ability to navigate various software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office)
    • Experience in CAFM systems desirable (training provided if required)
  • Compliance Knowledge:

    • Familiarity with relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving licence.
