Maintenance Engineer

Panama Shift Pattern: Rotating days and nights Shifts: 12-hour turns (6am–6pm, 6pm–6am) Location: Peterborough, UK

Our future condiments manufacturing facility in Peterborough, UK, is building an exciting factory-of-the-future under McCormick’s vision of sustainability, innovation, and Flavour Solutions support. Join our Maintenance Engineer role to bring this forward-thinking facility to life.


About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic manufacturing environment, driving continuous improvement and operational excellence in a sustainable, future-focused setting.


Main Responsibilities

Plant and Equipment Performance

  • Continuously assess plant and equipment for efficiency, purpose, and improvement, ensuring optimised output.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and problem-solve to minimise downtime through scheduled, planned, and ad-hoc maintenance.
  • Conduct **scheduled and planned maintenance to maintain high utilisation rates.
  • Implement improvements to continuous improvement systems.

Sustainability & Resource Management

  • Collaborate to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, focusing on energy efficiency and waste minimisation.

Production Alignment

  • Liaise closely with the production team to enable timely plant start-ups.
  • Review production schedules and workload estimates for job completion.

Team Collaboration

  • Coordinate activities with production supervisors, materials teams, and process technicians.
  • Work with Quality and Production teams to enhance product quality and customer service.
  • Manage coordination of external Engineers, Contractors, and Vendors.

Compliance & Safety

  • Strict adherence to Health & Safety regulations.
  • Ensure full compliance with GMP, AIB, EFSIS, and HACCP Standards.
  • Protect against contamination and maintain production safety.
  • Food safety legislation understanding; compliance with company policies and HACCP requirements.

Process Improvement & Project Management

  • Oversee small projects and assist in major projects as required.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with standards and best practices.

Priority & Initiative

  • Flexible attitude towards Engineering duties, including cover for other engineering functions.
  • Complete tasks on-time, meeting deadlines.
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities independently.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in relevant Engineering Discipline.
  • Previous experience in a production environment (preferably food or consumer products industry) with strong Engineering skills.
  • Well-rounded understanding of inter-disciplinary skills and adaptability.

Technical Competencies

  • Well-versed in AC/DC drives and associated control equipment.
  • Problem-solving and fault-finding expertise.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams.
  • Practical knowledge of Allen Bradley, Schneider, and Siemens PLCs.
  • PC literacy covering MS Word, Lotus Notes, and Excel.

Health, Safety, & Legislation

  • Food handling safety expertise.
  • Awareness of HACCP, PUWER, LOLER (LOLA), and COSHH.

Soft Skills

  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) for supplier coordination.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing constructively as part of a team.
  • ** solution-focused attitude** with confidence to upskill and embrace learning.
  • Owns energy and drive for achieving timely results.
