Maintenance Engineer - Automation - West Brom

Entry Role: Multi-Skilled Engineer (Mechanical & Electrical) – Property Fulfilment & Engineering Team

About the Role

An exciting new opportunity within our Property Function! We are looking for a multi-skilled engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical and electrical disciplines to join our provincial team. In this role, you will play a key part in maintaining and repairing brand-new, state-of-the-art equipment, delivering exceptional performance and showcasing a commitment to continuous improvement.

Given your technical expertise, you will prioritise customer service, ensuring your work is efficient, safe, and aligned with operational needs while developing a culture of collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders across all departments.

Core Responsibilities

You will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and reliability of cutting-edge equipment within your nominated Urban Fulfilment Centre (UFC), utilisation your engineering knowledge to ensure peak operational conditions through:

  • Regular operational maintenance

    • Conduct both formal and informal inspections to assess the state of equipment.
    • Perform maintenance tasks in line with industry best practice and engineering principles.
    • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance machine efficiency where possible.
  • Repair & Reliability Management

    • Complete preventative maintenance and repairs with excellence.
    • Immediately address critical failures or schedule corrective work, ensuring accurate maintenance scheduling and logging.
  • Safety & Compliance

    • Maintain strict adherence to health and safety standards, conducting risk assessments for all tasks.
    • Operate across confined or challenging environments while prioritising the well-being of yourself and co-workers.
  • Operational Support & Collaboration

    • Build strong internal relationships with operational colleagues and stakeholders.
    • Support site performance by tracking key metrics such as equipment availability and reliability metrics.
    • Proactively engage with colleagues to promote operational efficiency.
  • Problem Solving & Analysis

    • Adopt root cause analysis methods to document causes of major equipment outages or breakdowns.
    • Apply data-driven decision-making to improve processes and equipment performance.

  • Administration & Systems Management

    • Ensure the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is always updated.
    • Complete and maintain administrative duties such as shift reports to a high quality.
    • Support strategic maintenance budgeting by accurately tracking spare parts consumption and repair hours.
  • Sustainable Engineering Practices

    • Maintain cost control by ensuring spares are optimally used and repaired/restored equipment for future use.
    • Adapt to a maintenance protocol that balances cost, reliability, and minimal waste.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  • Qualification

    • A completed full engineering apprenticeship or the equivalent of NVQ Level 3 (or higher) in an engineering discipline such as mechanical or electrical.
    • A background in engineering with a proven track record in mechanical maintenance, electrical repair, or a hybrid skillset.
  • Experience

    • Hands-on operational experience in an engineering or maintenance environment—preferably with highly automated or industrial equipment.
    • Demonstrated ability to cross-skill between electrical and mechanical disciplines.
    • Experience in troubleshooting technical challenges and utilising root cause analysis techniques.
  • Professional & Interpersonal Skills

    • Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve equipment issues efficiently.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder management, demonstrating an ability to explain technical matters clearly.
    • Experience in data analysis and operational reporting with an influence-focused mindset.
