We are looking for a highly motivated Multiskilled Canning Engineer to join our Engineering team.

Working within a fast-paced manufacturing environment, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving the performance, reliability, and efficiency of our canning and packaging equipment.

This is an opportunity to be more than just a maintenance engineer. We are looking for someone who will inspire, influence, and develop others, drive engineering excellence, improve equipment reliability, and contribute to a high-performing culture across the site. You will play a key role in advancing our Lean Manufacturing journey and Reliability Programme, helping to deliver world-class performance through continuous improvement and operational excellence.

General Description

This role requires a proactive engineer who can combine strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and positively influence colleagues. You will play a key role in driving engineering standards, improving equipment reliability, and supporting a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

You will also be expected to support the site's Reliability Programme, applying structured problem-solving and Root Failure Analysis (RFA) methodologies to eliminate repeat failures, reduce downtime, and improve asset performance. An understanding of Lean Manufacturing principles will be beneficial for identifying waste, driving efficiency improvements, and delivering sustainable operational gains.


Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Fault Analysis

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on canning and packaging equipment, including bottling equipment when required.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults.
  • Minimise downtime through:
    • Effective fault-finding
    • Root cause analysis
    • Root Failure Analysis (RFA) implementation
  • Support the site's Reliability Programme through proactive maintenance and equipment improvement activities.

Continuous Improvement & Efficiency

  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve:
    • Asset reliability

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing principles to enhance:
    • Safety

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records using the site's CMMS system.

Engineering Projects & Compliance

  • Support equipment installations, upgrades, and engineering projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all:
    • Health & Safety
    • Quality
    • Food Safety regulations
  • Collaborate with Production and Operations teams to maximise equipment performance and OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness).

Leadership, Coaching & Influence

As a key member of the Engineering team, you will be expected to:

  • Lead by example through behaviours, technical expertise, and problem-solving approach.
  • Share technical knowledge and engineering best practice across the team.
  • Mentor colleagues to support the development of engineering capability.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Influence safe working practices and engineering standards adherence.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Time-served Engineering Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification.
  • NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in an Engineering discipline.
  • Experience in FMCG, food, beverage, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills.
  • Experience with automated production and packaging equipment.
  • Good understanding of:
    • Reliability Engineering principles
    • Root Cause Analysis
    • Continuous Improvement methodologies
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in a beverage or canning environment.
  • Knowledge of PLC-controlled equipment.
  • HNC/HND in Engineering.
  • 18th Edition Electrical Qualification.
  • Experience using a CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management System).
  • Understanding of Lean Manufacturing tools and techniques.
  • Participation experience in:
    • Root Failure Analysis (RFA) investigations
    • Reliability improvement programmes
