About the Role

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Richardson Crisp Malt’s Alloa facility, where you will carry out planned and reactive maintenance of production machinery while ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), health & safety, and legislative requirements. You will also provide on-call support for evening/weekend breakdowns.
As part of a customer-focused, diverse, and innovative organisation, your role will be critical in maintaining production excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Primary Objective
- Reporting to the Maltings Manager, you will ensure the reliable operation of all site and plant equipment to meet production targets, aligning with Richardson’s commitment to excellence.
Daily Duties
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Drive efficiency improvements across the site via continuous monitoring.
- Identify and report potential safety and operational issues to management.
- Adhere to strict maintenance documentation and company systems.
- Recommend operational improvements based on expertise.
- Assist in the installation and commissioning of new equipment where required.
- Ensure full compliance with health & safety regulations, food safety laws, and environmental procedures.

Technical & Trade-Specific Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical testing, fault-finding, installation, and inspections (Tier 1 reactive maintenance).
- Conduct bearing replacements, gearbox repairs, and drive system maintenance.
- Execute Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedules.
- Keep up-to-date with new techniques, tools, and best practices via training.
General Accountabilities
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and housekeeping.
- Follow company policies, ** mutate in training** when required.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience
✔ Acquired mechanical engineering apprenticeship qualification, BTEC, HNC, or equivalent. ✔ Proven problem-solving skills with a quality-focused mindset. ✔ Proficient in computerised maintenance systems (e.g., MES, CMMS) and Microsoft Office. ✔ Hands-on experience in mechanical testing, inspection, and basic welding/fabrication. ✔ PUWER compliance (Safe Use ofTools Equipment). ✔ Full and unrestricted UK driving license (essential for site travel and emergency response).

Desirable Experience
🔹 Previous experience in Maltings or the adjunct ingredients sector. 🔹 Knowledge of DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres) regulations. 🔹 Familiarity with Material Handling Systems (e.g., bucket elevators, conveyors, screw systems). 🔹 Turning and milling experience. 🔹 LOLER certification (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment).
