Maintenance Engineer (Mechanical) – Crisp Malt, Alloa

Located at our Crisp Malt, Alloa, role you’ll support the aluminium malt production process, ensuring equipment efficiency and plant availability while adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), health & safety regulations, and environmental procedures.
About the Role
Primary Objective: As a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, you’ll report to the Maltings Manager to deliver planned and reactive maintenance across site equipment. Your responsibilities include covering out-of-hours breakdowns, maintaining production health, ensuring compliance, and driving continuous improvement.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Core Work
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance (including mechanical testing, fault-finding, repairs, and commissioning).
- Perform routine tasks such as bearing replacements, gearbox servicing, and standby systems maintenance.
- Contribute to efficiency improvements and process optimisation to reduce downtime.
- Record maintenance activities in agreed systems (e.g. computer-based databases) and ensure compliance with:
- GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)
- Health & Safety (H&S) Law
- Food Safety Regulations
- Company Policies & Systems
- Environmental Procedures

**ROOT-Cause Analysis & Proactive Support
- Identify and report equipment weaknesses to management for corrective action.
- Recommend mechanical upgrades that align with production demands.
- Support the installation and start-up of new plant equipment where applicable.
Anti-Fatality & Good Practice
- Maintain a vigilant ‘eyes and ears’ approach in the operating area.
- Adhere to International Graduate & Safety Regulations (IDSEA).
- Keep abreast of industry developments, complete mandatory training, and uphold high standards of housekeeping.

Person Specification
Essential Skills & Traits
✔ An engineering aptitude (mechanical focus) and experience of diagnosing and resolving plant/equipment malfunctions. ✔ Problem-solving mindset and meticulous attention to quality assurance. ✔ Ability to work independently and within a team. ✔ Proper use of hand tools/fittings (PUWER) and knowledge of mechanical maintenance systems.

Technical Qualifications & Certifications
✔ Minimum formal qualification: Recognised qualification such as BTEC/HNC/Apprenticeship (Engineering). ✔ Full UK Manual Driving Licence (essential for emergency call-outs).
Desirable Additional Standards
- Experience within a malting environment, especially with DSEAR compliance.
- Hands-on ability in machine turning/milling, welding/fabrication and lifting equipment operation (LOLER).
- Expertise in material handling systems: bucket elevators, belt conveyors, di.wders, and variable-speed drives.
