Skilled Maintenance Engineer – Kepak St. Merryn, Bodmin
About Kepak

Our Bodmin facility – Kepak St. Merryn – specialises in beef processing, delivering products from butchers’ counter-ready cuts to branded packaged meat. All goods are ethically sourced from local, open-pasture farms and hand-selected by master butchers, ensuring the highest standards of quality and hygiene.
The Role: Skilled Maintenance Engineer
Purpose
As the Skilled Maintenance Engineer, you’ll be pivotal in ensuring production line efficiency by maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment, reducing downtime, and supporting our Production Team in achieving operational excellence. You’ll troubleshoot faulty machinery, implement Preventive & Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM) protocols, and collaborate with suppliers to optimise process improvements.
About the Work
Based at our Bodmin site, you’ll operate on a 4-on, 4-off rotating shift pattern (5.00am–5.00pm), averaging 42 hours per week. A competitive salary is on offer, aligned with your experience.
Key Responsibilities
Core Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance
- Conduct routine electrical and mechanical checks on production lines and processing equipment, performing quality inspections and troubleshooting faults to minimise downtime.
- Repair electro-mechanical plant, including PLC-controlled machinery, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, and high-speed equipment used in beef processing.
- Investigate and diagnose PLC programming faults to restore seamless operations.
Technical Support & Operational Reliability
- Provide real-time updates to the Production Team regarding breakdowns or maintenance timelines.
- Monitor plant performance, detecting performance degradation and initiating repairs based on judgement.
- Proactively identify and analyse inefficiencies, suggesting improvements and collaborating with suppliers on new installations or modifications.
- Ensure strict compliance with health and safety legislation, food hygiene standards, and company procedures.

Proactive Maintenance & Documentation
- Carry out Preventive & Predictive Maintenance Routines, updating our maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Record work orders, store transactions, and changes to systems.
- Manage Permit-to-Work (PTW) Systems and participate in risk assessments/toolbox talks.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a clean, hygienic workspace across all areas, including transit routes to/from the workshop and storeroom.
- Support the Training & Development Strategy by upskilling in new disciplines and rotating onto shift cover where needed.
Requirements & Essential Skills
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 (Mechanical and/or Electrical) – essential.
- BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (17th accepted with commitment to upskill).
- Desirable: certifications in refrigeration systems, refrigerated transport refrigeration, or food processing hygiene.
Technical Expertise
- Mechanical understanding: Conveyor systems, hydraulic/pneumatic presses, packaging machinery.
- Electrical knowledge: PLC programming, troubleshooting loop controls.
- Refrigeration systems experience in commercial or food processing (preferred for this environment).
- Permit-to-Work (PTW) Systems Knowledge – mandatory in a food manufacturing site.
- Strong diagnostic skills and ability for root cause analysis.
