Mechanical Engineering Lead – Europe & South Africa (ESA) Terminals

** job Profile: Mechanical Engineering Lead – ESA Terminals**
Honorary for leading and delivering mechanical engineering support across Europe & South Africa (ESA) terminals. This role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operation of assets while developing capabilities and driving mechanical integrity, risk management, and continual improvement.
** Key Accountabilities**
Team Leadership
- Lead and manage the ESA Mechanical Engineering team, providing direction, coaching, and technical guidance to ensure high-quality engineering support
- Foster collaboration across regional teams, encouraging knowledge-sharing and adoption of best practices
Operations & Compliance
- Ensure mechanical engineering input supports safe, reliable, and compliant operations aligned with bp’s Health, Safety, Security & Environmental (HSSE) expectations and Operational Management Systems (OMS) requirements
- Act as the focal point for mechanical integrity and engineering risk management, including:
- Leading engineering barrier reviews
- Supporting risk register inputs
- Oversee engineering work allocation, prioritisation, and assurance, guaranteeing timely deliverables across ESA terminals
Equipment & Technical Oversight
- Serve as Equipment Class Owner for ESA, overseeing discipline oversight across assigned classes and managing barrier health
- Current ownership of:
- P2 Structural Integrity
- P4 Mechanical Integrity
- P5 Relief Systems
- P9 Collision Prevention & Break-away Systems
- M1 Secondary Containment
- M2 Passive Fire Protection

- Integrate local learnings, global equipment strategies, and reliability insights into local strategies
- Verify designs, testing, and functional requirements in engineering phases
- Monitor barrier performance via OMS Self-Verification, KPIs, incidents, and assurance findings
Assurance & Improvement
- Proactively identify performance gaps and recommend corrective actions to the Risk Owner
- Support VP/SVP Risk Review processes as needed
Process & Stakeholder Engagement
- Support BP’s Major Programmes, including:
- Mechanical integrity improvements
- OMS 5.4 delivery
- Inspection and maintenance enhancements
- Guide Asset Engineers with technical oversight, prioritisation, and support
- Engage with Terminal Managers and Asset Teams to ensure engineering activities deliver value to site operations
Knowledge Development
- Develop and update key engineering processes (e.g., practices, standards)
- Foster capability growth within the team, including early-career engineers
- Provide training and support to ensure engineers are competent and successfully deployed
Required Skills & Experience
Technical & Sector Expertise
- Strong leadership experience, with a track record managing or influencing distributed engineering teams
- Mechanical Engineering background, preferably within:
- Terminals
- Pipelines
- Process facilities
- Extensive knowledge of Tanks, Pumps, Pipelines, Valves, and Marine Facilities (jetties, loading arms)
- Expertise in:
- Mechanical integrity
- Inspections
- Maintenance
- Asset engineering
Industry Knowledge & Standards
- Deep working knowledge of government and industry standards and practices
- Strong grasp of risk management, engineering governance, and assurance processes
