Head of Maintenance & Equipment Reliability Engineer

BASF Metals Recycling Ltd operates a modern facility in Cinderford, focused on recovering precious metals from automotive catalytic converters. We enhance sustainability, support the circular economy, and prioritise safe, efficient operations.

We are looking for a Maintenance & Equipment Reliability Engineer—a hands-on problem-solver who thrives by fixing issues, improving reliability, and ensuring seamless operations.


About the Role

This isn’t just maintenance—you’ll be the technical leader driving performance, reliability, and safety across site equipment.

Your core focus: Drive operational excellence in equipment performance with a blend of practical troubleshooting and long-term reliability strategy.


Responsibilities

This role is hands-on, essential, and impactful. You will:

  • Diagnose and repair faults – Handle electrical and mechanical issues efficiently to minimise downtime.
  • Lead preventative maintenance – Plan and execute reliability-driven maintenance to maximise uptime.
  • Reduce downtime – Analyse performance trends and champion continuous improvement.
  • Own process safety – Manage P&IDs, risk assessments, and changes through MOC (Management of Change).
  • Oversee maintenance standards –
    • Supervise contractors, permits, and safe systems of work.
    • Ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Manage heavy-duty equipment – handle forklifts, cranes, and MEWPs.
  • Optimise spares & inventory – Maintain critical stock to prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Provide 24/7 support – Be the expert go-to during out-of-hours escalations.

Key Requirements

A practical, safety-conscious engineer with a focus on solving issues and optimising systems.

Essential:

  • A Level 3 qualification in Electrotechnical studies (or equivalent).
  • Proficiency in:
    • 18th Edition (BS7671) wiring regulations.
    • Inspection and Testing (City & Guilds 2391-52).
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and safe isolation (Lock-Out/Tag-Out, LOTO) experience.
  • Mechanical fault diagnosis and repair capabilities.
  • Experience in manufacturing or production environments.
  • Ability to read and apply electrical drawings, P&IDs, and technical documents.
  • Working knowledge of permits and safe working practices.

Desirable:

  • Process safety experience (including COMAH environments).
  • Familiarity with CMMS/SAP-based maintenance planning systems.
  • Background in automation, PLCs, or instrumentation.
  • Certifications in:
    • LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations).
    • IPAF (Mechanical Equipment Work at Height).
    • Machinery safety (e.g., ISO 13849).
  • Experience managing external contractors, MOC processes, or supporting large-scale operational projects.
