Core Purpose
The Maintenance Operative will assist in maintaining the school’s facilities, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and operational needs. Responsibilities include minor repairs, grounds upkeep, emergency system monitoring, and administrative record-keeping to preserve a functional and protective environment for pupils and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Building & Grounds Maintenance
- Carry out repairs to doors, windows, toilets (seats/flushes), furniture, taps, and undergo minor and major decoration as required.
- Maintain practical bias toward hands-on troubleshooting (though guidance will be provided where necessary).
- Consistently check and refill fire extinguishers, security systems (CCTV, alarms), and general equipment to ensure readiness for emergencies.

Safety & Compliance
- Monitor and log all emergency systems (fire, security) testing in accordance with Health & Safety (H&S) regulations.
- Respond to CCTV footage retrieval requests and ensure compliance with all statutory maintenance checks.
- Be aware of critical incidents and follow instructions from the Senior Leadership Team duringlive situations.
- Document all maintenance records linked to school infrastructure, grounds, and equipment (to include in health/safety logs).

Additional Duties
- Support the Facilities Manager with temporary relocation or reassignment of office/classroom furniture (e.g., portaging).
- Test, treat, and maintain the school’s indoor swimming pool, including chemical adjustments and cleaning.

Reporting & Continuing Improvement
- Flag any non-emergency technical issues to the Business Manager for specialist resolution.
- Embrace learning new skills/technologies through training or peer collaboration.
What You’ll Bring
Essential
- Full UK Driving License (Cover for ad-hoc school site shuttle transport may be requested.)
- Industry Experience Direct experience in a building trade (e.g., plumbing, electrical work, painting)
- Practical & Interpersonal Skills
- Solutions-focused mindset with minimal need for close supervision.
- Clear communication skills and ability to demonstrate trade knowledge when advised.
- Self-motivation to thrive with both teamwork and individual accountability.
- Adaptability to learn technical procedures (H&S, maintenance) quickly.
- Attention to Detail & Safety
- Rigorous adherence to Health & Safety laws, reporting any deviations immediately.
- Flexible ability to work under pressure with effective time/energy management.

Desirable (Not mandatory but valued)
- Formal qualifications:
- Level 2 Intermediate Qualification from the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (IWFM).
- Level 2 Managers’ Safety & Health (IOSH)
- Certifications:
- First Aid at Work
- Fire Marshall training
- Any prior work in education (child-specific awareness preferred).
- Professional attributes:
- Methodical, respectful, and trusted judgment when required: Keeping CCTV footage discreet and secure remotely as a Sat Nav is mandatory during cover trips.
