Maintenance Team Leader – Automotive Manufacturing

A global automotive manufacturer in the Telford area is seeking a Maintenance Team Leader to join their state-of-the-art facility. This exciting opportunity is open to candidates with a strong technical background, leadership experience, and a proven track record in high-volume, fast-moving manufacturing environments (e.g., automotive, aerospace, industrial, or FMCG sectors).


Role & Overview

  • Job Title: Maintenance Team Leader
  • Shift: Weekend shift (Friday to Sunday, 05:50 AM – 18:00)
  • Location: Telford
  • Salary: £56,888 per annum (including shift allowance) + pension + benefits + overtime opportunities
  • Employer: Industry leader with a global presence

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Shift Management

  • Ensure equipment availability aligns with departmental targets throughout the shift.
  • Manage Maintenance Technicians' holidays per company policy, escalating conflicts to line management as needed.
  • Oversee prompt resolution of plant faults to maintain smooth production operations.

Technical & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct root cause analysis on recurring or major breakdowns, producing actionable improvement reports.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to eliminate recurring issues using structured methodologies.
  • Optimise preventative maintenance (PM) schedules, delegating tasks to ensure KPI compliance.

Stakeholder & HSE Compliance

  • Provide technical support to internal teams, including advisory roles outside breakdown responses.
  • Ensure full compliance with corporate policies, OSHA standards, and HSE guidelines during maintenance work.
  • Promote 5S workplace principles across the team and broader facility.

People & Performance Management

  • Lead disciplinary processes, conduct workplace investigations, and oversee performance appraisals (including PDRs/PIPs and absence management).
  • Mentor, coach, and develop team members through training, feedback, and career pathways.
  • Implement leadership by example, embedding company culture and professional standards.

Shift Coordination

  • Plan and organise shift activities to prioritise timely maintenance tasks.
  • Delegate effectively to maintain team efficiency and task accountability.

Project & Development Support

  • Assist management with ad hoc projects to support wider departmental goals.

Key Requirements

Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven technical leadership within maintenance, engineering, or manufacturing environments.
  • Time-served apprenticeship in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Multiskilled capabilities (willingness to learn and adapt).
  • Strong ability to delegate effectively to skilled team members.
  • Experience in fault diagnosis using hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.

Soft Skills & Application

  • Exceptional report writing and documentation skills (Excel/Word proficiency essential).
  • Confident technical communicator, able to brief shift teams clearly.
  • Hands-on understanding of 5S methodology and lean manufacturing principles.
