Maintenance Technician (Permanent) – Edinburgh
Location: Craigentinny Train Maintenance Centre (Edinburgh) Contract: Permanent Salary: £43,696 plus 15% shift allowance and £3,000 location allowance
Hitachi Rail is seeking enthusiastic, self-motivated Maintenance Technicians to join our dynamic team. You’ll play a key role in maintaining and repairing rolling stock, working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment on a rotating day/night shift basis.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance on rolling stock in accordance with vehicle maintenance instructions.
- Undertake servicing, preparation, and repairs of train assets, including incident fault rectification.
- Conduct driving duties within depot confines as per depot operating procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement of maintenance processes, including examination tasks and adherence to HMIs.
- Attend testing locations, main line stations, and outstations for preventive and corrective maintenance, including overnight deployments when required.
- Support Maintenance Team Leaders and Duty Shift Managers in meeting production and customer service needs.
- Log all work activities and stock usage in most modern Maintenance Management Systems (MMS).
- Uphold strict adherence to health and safety protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical & Practical Experience:
- Experience working in a 24/7 shift environment within modern rail/roll-out maintenance.
- Deep understanding of technical safety procedures (manual handling, COSHH, working at height, powered plant/tools).
- Proficiency in fault-finding techniques, including electrical/pneumatic/mechanical diagnostics via PC-based systems and remote diagnostics.
- Experience reading technical schematics and drawings, plus proficiency in modern MMS systems with reliability/availability trend analysis.
Education & Certifications:
- Completed a mechanical or electrical-based apprenticeship.
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in an engineering discipline.
Personal Attributes:
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Calm under pressure with strong analytical skills to diagnose complex faults.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, including detailed fault report writing.
- Diplomatic, professional, and loyal to organisational values.
Desirable Skills (Not Essential)
- Intermediate IT skills (Microsoft Office suite).
- Qualifications in fire safety (warden), first aid, or depot isolation (AC/DC).
