Job Description
Permanent Position: Maintenance Technician (Rolling Stock)
Salary: £43,696 per annum, including:
- 15% shift allowance (£3,000)
- Location allowance
Key Accountabilities
You will play a vital role in maintaining and ensuring the safe, efficient functioning of Hitachi Rail’s rolling stock. In this fast-paced, team-based environment, you’ll perform:
- Corrective and preventative maintenance on board rolling stock while adhering to technical protocols.
- Servicing and preparation of trains for service.
- Driving duties within depot confines, following operational procedures.
- Active participation in process improvements, including updating maintenance schedules and maintaining stock alignment.
- Fault rectification and repairs, assist teams in hitting production targets, and record all activities in our maintenance management system (MMS).
- Attendance at testing locations (mainline stations and offsite) to perform preventative/corrective maintenance.
- Rotating shift work to meet customer service demands (day/night rotation), including occasional overnight travel.
- Engaging with Shift Managers to ensure production goals are met.
- Supporting colleagues as needed, maintaining high safety norms.

About You
Essential Requirements
Skills & Experience
- Strong background in mechanical, electrical, or engineering disciplines, including:
- Manual handling, COSHH, working at height, power tools
- PC-based diagnostics and laptop troubleshooting
- Fault-finding & repairs using schematics (chemical, electrical, pneumatic)
- No experience with fault code analysis without remotes or trend report familiarity.
- Hands-on experience with maintenance management systems (MMS) and reliability trend analysis.
- Proven shift work knowledge in high-availability environments.
- Health/safety first – strict adherence to company safety protocols.
Attitude & Mindset
- Self-motivated and adaptable, with a positive attitude.
- Proven ability to work autonomously or within teams.
- Excellent ethics compliance with both internal and regulatory standards.
- Lines up with Hitachi’s core values – proactive, collaborative, and resourceful.
- Clear communication (written and verbal) to report issues and collaborate with colleagues.
- Dependable, loyal, and committed to delivering excellence.
Certifications
- Valid or accessible mechanical, electrical, or engineering NVQs (Level 2 & 3).
- Consideration with completed serviced apprenticeships in relevant trades.
Desired (Not Essential) Qualifications
- Experience as a Fire Warden, First Aider, Work-at-Height, COSHH, or Manual Handling Practitioner.
- Familiarity with AC/DC isolation depot operations.
- Practical experience with MS Office tools (Excel, Word at an intermediate level).
